Javelina/Peccary

Greetings and Peace, all 

Has anyone else considered raising Javelina for meat? They diverged evolutionarily from pigs about 40 million years ago--they aren't swine. What they *are* are native to North America, well suited to hot climates, more disease resistant than hogs, and able to eat material that would kill any other animal.

Nobody to my knowledge has attempted to breed for litter size, meat production, or anything else. It just seems a bit of a shame, especially considering that there are over a billion Muslims who could eat them--along with anyone else who eats animal protein.
