Let me just bring one verse for reflection...

31:14
"Be grateful to Me and to your parents; to Me is the destination."

We all know being grateful can be performed by words in order to show your appreciation... It is so great if words reflect what they utter... Here in this verse God says "Be grateful to ME and to your PARENTS" ...
My logical question is what is being grateful to parents mean?  Is it words? Mother,  father thank you... Or  the word BE GRATEFUL  is beyond that and loads of combined efforts of good actions in appreciation of what Parents have done to children when they were kids...?  So reflect what could be the meaning of BE GRATEFUL to Allah means?

Any thoughts... Indeed welcome..

Yes indeed brother jkhan. Thanking GOD is doing good deeds- work righyouesness- as appreciation to His guidance.
Example 34:13:
They made for him anything he wanted - niches, statues, deep pools, and heavy cooking pots. O family of David, work (righteousness) to show your appreciation. Only a few of My servants are appreciative.
يَعمَلونَ لَهُ ما يَشاءُ مِن مَحٰريبَ وَتَمٰثيلَ وَجِفانٍ كَالجَوابِ وَقُدورٍ راسِيٰتٍ اعمَلوا ءالَ داوۥدَ شُكرًا وَقَليلٌ مِن عِبادِىَ الشَّكورُ

Work your thankfulness not say it.. i.e Being thankful is doing good deeds back to those you wish to thank or to others.
Like helping other people to show our thanks to those who helped us.

GOD bless you.
Peace.

Glad to hear that you hold that understanding of word Grateful ..for me indeed Being grateful is full of action in appreciation as you say.. Thank you...
You know Allah also be gratful for our actions...so Allah doesn't merely thank us... But he in return doing in action such as reward and make us happy... Hechas a big plan for believers.. He is grateful

@ Goodlogic

Since you replied,  I further would like to bring to light with some other verses..
Pls carefully read 10:22 and 10:23 ...it really indicates a broader picture of being Grateful to Allah..

@everyone.

Pls share your knowledge in this topic perhaps I would be ale to get some more reflection based on your understandings...

Note.. I am not an Arab but as far as I know Arabs of modern days use phrases like Shukran  Jazeeran..Shukran Jiddan.. It all means instant thanks.. But I don't see the Quran meaning in their usage of the word Shin Kahf Ra..

We all talk about dogs and their gratefulness towards their master,  I feel we all should be like dogs literally towards our Lord..  Truthfulness at its finest..

Thank you...

Peace jkhan.

10:22 , those who implore GOD when they are in trouble and promise that they will be appreciative if GOD helps them;
However in 10;23 they turn out unappreciative and do the opposite. They break their promise and rebel/commit transgressions and oppose the truth..

"  Be thankful" in 10:22 means we do good and follow GOD s straight path// follow GOD s commands and instructions and work righteousness in our life.
Transgressing in 10:23 means opposing GOD and follow the "Taghout path" .
I am in agreement with you . Thanking GOD means to do/ work righteousness and follow the straight path in our life.
GOD bless you.

And just to clarify that "Thanking GOD is something we do  and not something we say, GOD gives the consequences of being thankful and the opposite in 10:25 -26 and 27:

God invites to the abode of peace, and guides whomever He wills in a straight path.
وَاللَّهُ يَدعوا إِلىٰ دارِ السَّلٰمِ وَيَهدى مَن يَشاءُ إِلىٰ صِرٰطٍ مُستَقيمٍ

Those who are thankful ,follow the straight path:

For the righteous, the reward will be multiplied manifold. Their faces will never experience any deprivation or shame. These are the dwellers of Paradise; they abide therein forever.
لِلَّذينَ أَحسَنُوا الحُسنىٰ وَزِيادَةٌ وَلا يَرهَقُ وُجوهَهُم قَتَرٌ وَلا ذِلَّةٌ أُولٰئِكَ أَصحٰبُ الجَنَّةِ هُم فيها خٰلِدونَ

And the opposite, those who are not/transgress:

As for those who earned sins, their requital is equivalent to their sin. Humiliation is their lot, and no one beside God can protect them. Their faces will seem overwhelmed by masses of dark night. They will be the dwellers of Hell; they abide therein forever.
وَالَّذينَ كَسَبُوا السَّيِّـٔاتِ جَزاءُ سَيِّئَةٍ بِمِثلِها وَتَرهَقُهُم ذِلَّةٌ ما لَهُم مِنَ اللَّهِ مِن عاصِمٍ كَأَنَّما أُغشِيَت وُجوهُهُم قِطَعًا مِنَ الَّيلِ مُظلِمًا أُولٰئِكَ أَصحٰبُ النّارِ هُم فيها خٰلِدونَ

The consequences/-rewards /sanctions are given for our works ,not saying words of thanks.

GOD bless you.

Peace.. Thank you for reply... Excellent..

I would like to combine this topic with sīn bā ḥā (س ب ح)  and ḥā mīm dāl (ح م د)

Indeed it involves words and mind.. I know everything on earth and heavens Sabih.. How they do we don't realize... But they do.. But what exactly one has to do?
Allah says Lahu mulku walahu hamdu.. It clearly indicates Hamd is something like Majesty.. Alhamdullah ...is it like The majesty /supremacy  is to Allah... So if Majesty  belongs to Allah alone then sabih / exalting only belongs to Him.
Subahanalla / Exaltation belongs to Him..

How to exalt His majesty..?  Words?
For me indeed words with reflection... But not necessary arabic words obviously cuz everything Sabih Allah on earth and heavens so just leave language issue.. ... You have to exalt Allah almost always but not with mere words but complete agreement with words what We utter.. For example below verse..

14:39
"The Majesty  is to Allah (Alhamdulillah) , who has granted to me in old age Ishmael and Isaac. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication."

So.. Here Ibrahim begins with Alahamdulillah and give reasons abd it means Ibrahim communicates with Allah after Exalting Allah..

Even if you take the very first chapter after exalting Allah it teaches us to communicate with Allah.....

Any thoughts...

Thank you is working /doing good deeds as appreciation , Hamd is being grateful and acknowledging the blessing/reward by words/ advertising and praise.
Reverencing GOD comes with both Hamd and Sabh . i.e GOD will be in the mind 24/7 . A number one priority in our life day and night. Absolute devotion and love of GOD  comes with hamd , thanks and sabh

When GOD s guidance quicks in, we start to become appreciative, grateful and devoted to GOD Alone. Advertising GOD Alone In words and deeds, in our way of life GOD and His message/instructions become our number one priority.

@everyone

17:111
Majesty to Allah (Alhamd lillah) , who has not taken a son and has had no partner in dominion and has no protector out of weakness; and magnify Him with glorification."

Take a look at above verse...  It all has a meaning... Reflect about Allah and once the reflection convinces you thrn you acknowledge and then you spontaneously Sabih /exalt the name of the Lord..
There is no sabih without reflection... As you can see in verse 3:191 they think of Allah's creations and immediately says 'SubhanaKa'/ Exalted you are...
No rituals... No mere words... even 1000 times daily if one says Alhamdullah without any reflection at all like a parrot or robot.. No point...
So reflect about Allah and His creations and His mercy, all of signs.. humble,  acknowledge,  Exalt Him with His Majesty... Make your connection to Allah more strong and lively... Don't just make it a word or phrase which mouth releases like conventional Muslims greet each other while mind is empty.. . Making Allah's name proud is not just saying His name... Making your company or yout mother's  name shining or proud doesn't mean just saying the names but in actions and speak heads up... Glorify the name of Allah by you being person full of actions which pleases your Lord. Indeed you are glorifying then.. Words should and can be spoken highly of in action you are...

That's my take..

good logic

Thank you jkhan.

To summarise , this verse says it clearly that if we are thankful to GOD it is the opposite of being an opponent of GOD and we benefit only ourselves by following GOD s message / the straight path. That is how we become appreciative:

The one who possessed knowledge from the book said, "I can bring it to you in the blink of your eye." When he saw it settled in front of him, he said, "This is a blessing from my Lord, whereby He tests me, to show whether I am appreciative or unappreciative. Whoever is appreciative is appreciative for his own good, and if one turns unappreciative, then my Lord is in no need for him, Most Honorable."

Indeed it is a test for us as well, Either to be appreciative which is to do good to benefit ourselves or to be the opposite  which is to our detriment. GOD has no needs.

Peace Good logic brother..

Thank you for your reply..

Some may think Being grateful is just thanking God.. Being grateful indeed beyond it... For example one would say pointing some verses God says...  We have given you two eyes , won't you be grateful "..it may look like just thank God for giving two eyes.. No.. Two eyes Allah has gifted indeed to see.. But being grateful by having two eyes is to see Allah's creations and reflect.. Observe all Signs and ponder how Allah has blessed us with many a favors... That's what being grateful for giving us two eyes.. After all Allah says 'if you are grateful it's for us ' .. So if we grateful it benefits for us so obviously it's all about our own actions which will be credited to our account...
But Sabih (exalt)  with Hamd (Majesty) of Allah is not like being grateful but it is full of reflection and being directly exalting ... But all our actions are interconnected...

Fusion

For me personally, the heart whispers in silent shock & awe, acknowledging the infinite power and unfathomable beauty of the Creator and I always wonder and say "who the ... are you!!!!!"

This awe-inspiring tapestry of existence, with its boundless complexity and harmonious order, compels my soul to bow in humble adoration before the Divine. It is a moment of transcendent realization and am forced to utter words to thank him, though I did not do anything in practical sense, yet I am praising and thanking him.

Going further, we should consider mutual human relations.  Animals do a lot when taking care of their offspring; but when the offspring grow up they do not even recognize their parents.  Such should not be the case in human life. Therefore, Allah has directed man regarding his parents as they should be given loving care because His mother bore him (in her womb) while she herself became weaker.  Then she suckled and nourished him for a period of two years Whereas man's creation is dependent on God's Law, his nourishment is also no less due to parental care.  So, he should be grateful to God as well as to his parents.

6:46: Think ye, if Allah took away your hearing and your sight, and sealed up your hearts, who - a god other than Allah - could restore them to you?" See how We explain the signs by various (symbols); yet they turn aside.

89:15+
Now, whenever a human being is tested by their Lord through ˹His˺ generosity and blessings, they boast, "My Lord has ˹deservedly˺ honoured me!
But when He tests them by limiting their provision, they protest, "My Lord has ˹undeservedly˺ humiliated me!"
Absolutely not! In fact, you are not ˹even˺ gracious to the orphan, nor do you urge one another to feed the poor.
And you devour ˹others'˺ inheritance greedily, and love wealth fervently.

27:40:
Said one who had knowledge from the Scripture, "I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you." And when [Solomon] saw it placed before him, he said, "This is from the favor of my Lord to test me whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful - his gratitude is only for [the benefit of] himself. And whoever is ungrateful - then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous."

In short I believe being grateful and Thankful to almighty has many variations not necessarily only actions.

Thank you for your comment..

Allah says we created Men to see who is good in deeds.. In fact our actions are recorded for a reason.. What these actions /deeds?  Is it our rituals ? God created us to see who is good in rituals?  Well No.. Indeed easy to do rituals but honest life... Clean actions with pure heart is the toughest part of life... God is testing our life and life is full of actions...  Allah says the one who purofied his soul is indeed successful..how to purify a soul ?  Is it by rituals?  Nope.. It all depends how we live... In a nutshell God says.. Those who believe and do righteous good deeds we will grant them their reward in the hereafter.. Well what is Amal Salihan translated as righteous good deeds.. Needless to say it is opposite of evil actions..

So let's believe in Allah and do good deeds so we indeed be grateful to Allah.. If we grateful to Allah it is for our own benefit... Allah says so.. No benefit for Allah if we are grateful to Him.. Benefit is for us...
Quran is words but Quran is not words to repeat but it came to help our actions.. Quran was not revealed to perform rituals but to purify our souls.. Our selves.. It came to guide us and enhance our knowledge about our creator if in case we are not self aware with wisdom... Quran immensely helps..

May Allah guide us to what is right.. Let us be appreciative for our own benefit.. Lets please Allah.. So He would please US..
