The Quran says it was a "fish". But the only sea creature that could possibly do something like that is a whale, which is not a fish. So is this a mistake in the Quran or is the word "hut" in Arabic referring to a sea creature in general, rather than a fish as we understand today?

good logic

Have you eliminated a great whale shark? Surely that is a gigantic fish.

According to this article https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/could-a-whale-accidentally-swallow-you-it-is-possible-26353362/ whale sharks can't swallow humans because their esophagus is too small.

good logic

Also, there are no known cases of other whales swallowing humans and humans surviving the ordeal?.
For Jonah to be swallowed whole and alive and to stay alive is a special case.
I am more inclined to believe Qoran like I believe Moses parted the sea and Jesus healed the lepers.
Which whale I cannot tell you,but it says a fish. Must be a big fish?.
That is why I suggested the whale shark as an assumption.

Peace....

It is definitely a fish which swallowed Prophet Younus.  .. Science may clarify it mamal.. No harm.. But what if that in the eyes of God is Fish... Arabic word is loud and clear to claim it was fish...

16:79 "Do they not see the BIRDS controlled in the atmosphere of the sky? None holds them up except Allah. Indeed in that are signs for a people who believe."

Doesn't God talk about Birds here in the above verse.. So you want us to take away from this Big bats which is controlled in the atmosphere but they are mammals as well and definitely different to egg laying Birds.. As you all know there are lots of birds which hardly fly.. Aren't they in general birds but we expect a bird to fly.. If mammal is criteria to classify none bird then why not classify those who cannot fly as non bird.. But still bird.. Do you then say in the above verse bats can never be meant by God?
Okay butterfly also fly. But do we ever claim it as a bird?  If bat is not a bird what is it away from scientific classification? A bird but bat....that is my take.. Or is it mammal..who calling by nature any creature a mammal?  We human are classified mammals but do we call us mammals to explain human. But we call only as human not mammal.. So did God called Fish not mammal...

God knows best what He created.. IF God called it fish then it can only be a fish.. Not a snake on the sea creature or crocodile but a fish... If you don't find any other creature other than whale that can swallow a human body in the sea then Upto you to consider what it could have been... If you find only Whale then in the language of God it is a fish.. Just neglect scientific classification...

Layth

Peace,

The Quran uses the word "Hout" to describe the whale which swallowed Jonah (37:142) as well as the fish Moses and his guide were carrying with them (17:61) as well as the fish the fishermen who did not observe the Sabaath were missing (7:163) - so I would say that the Quran does not follow this mammal/fishdefinition we hear being observed.

P.S. interesting fact, because of this la k of distinction,  in Arabic we have created a new word "Samak" to indicate a "fish", while we use "Hout" to mean a "whale".

`And when God Alone is mentioned, the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter are filled with aversion; and when others are mentioned beside Him, they rejoice!` (The Quran 39:45)

Salam Layth,

Regarding the fish related to Moses and his guide, I believe the verse is 18:61 (and 18:63) ...not 17:61
