what does praying lead to... it does soothe our nerves and encourage us to do things in a certain way, i think.

good logic

Prayer is a connection /a call to the Creator. Like when you phone a dear friend for some kind of help.

We may look upon prayer simply as a means of getting things for ourselves, but the purpose of prayer is also that we may get to know God. "Ask, and you will receive..." i.e getting to cement a relationship with GOD.

What do you mean by "is god s mind changeable"?
Do you mean when  we are not granted our prayers?  Or we prayed for what is not in our interest and we want to change our prayer?
We are the ones with imperfect minds that change according to circumstances.

Prayer that has value will come from the special relationship  that one builds over time with our Creator ,like for example in Psalm 16:
Keep me safe, my God,

1  for in you I take refuge.

2  I say to the Lord, "You are my Lord;

apart from you I have no good thing."

3 I say of the holy people who are in the land,

"They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight."

4Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.

I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods

or take up their names on my lips.

5 Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;

you make my lot secure.

6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;

surely I have a delightful inheritance.

7 I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;

even at night my heart instructs me.

8 I keep my eyes always on the Lord.

With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;

my body also will rest secure,

10  because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,

nor will you let your faithful one see decay.

11 You make known to me the path of life;

you will fill me with joy in your presence,

with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

...etc.
Brother 357, best of luck with your relationship with your Creator.
GOD bless you.
Peace.

That is a nice prayer, and in this case you actually accept the way of your lord, but i meant in cases where people request things from  god for their gain, in which case god would be doing something according to your request, which is what majority of the Muslims do  .. with respect.

good logic

Peace 357.
Thanks for your reply.
There are those who say this:
"When you're praying because you are just trying to get out of a tough situation and gain your own comfort, that's a selfish prayer. The focus of that prayer is not in God's plan for you. It definitely isn't on his will. The focus is on you."

GOD however says this:
"When my servants ask about "ME"- GOD- I am near. I answer those who implore/pray to me..."

I say this:
It isn't always wrong to pray for ourselves. God wants us to bring our needs to Him, and to rely on Him and not just ourselves.

But there is always those who focus primarily on what they want from God rather than what He wants for them. (  I emphasise "FOR THEM" as GOD does not require/need anything from anyone)

Our selfishness  tends to  be at the expense of what others may want or need sometimes.
We need to reflect of why we need certain things unless of course it is a matter of urgency.
GOD bless you.

good logic

Peace 357,

Just to conclude for you,we have lots of examples in Qoran of when to pray,how to pray and why.

Let me give you two extreme examples:
1-Job-وَاذكُر عَبدَنا أَيّوبَ إِذ نادىٰ رَبَّهُ أَنّى مَسَّنِىَ الشَّيطٰنُ بِنُصبٍ وَعَذابٍ  prayed to GOD to cure his illness. Then showed a lot of patience and stayed loyal to GOD despite the delay to be cured he persevered . GOD answered his prayers . His loyalty and patience paid off, never despairing of GOD s mercy. I do not see selfishness in his prayer I see a real need. I also see his total loyalty and trust in GOD.

2- Soloman:
first, the context and background of why he prayed in this instant:(citing the verses to start with):
Soloman inherited the kingdom after his father David.
The cavalierly ( horses regiment) was brought to him for checking at the end of one day.
He liked their appearance and fitness _And said  to himself I love to do good things with these in remembrance to my Lord (for providing )-   after ordering them to do a trial run and saw them disappear into the  distance and dust,
When they returned to him,, he patted each horse  to show his pleasure with them.
(Like Job ,Soloman was also tested) Exhausted by his daily tasks ,he collapsed(like a dead body) on his chair,then repented  thinking to himself he is not managing.
Then he prayed to his Lord:
قالَ رَبِّ اغفِر لى وَهَب لى مُلكًا لا يَنبَغى لِأَحَدٍ مِن بَعدى إِنَّكَ أَنتَ الوَهّابُ
He said :  My Lord Forgive me( For not managing before) and grant me  a kingdom unlike any other(One I can manage according to my ability) -In case he does not do justice to it.
GOD then answered his prayer by providing more manpower and goods to help him manage :
فَسَخَّرنا لَهُ الرّيحَ تَجرى بِأَمرِهِ رُخاءً حَيثُ أَصابَ
...etc.
All of us humans need prayer at some time and most of the time. GOD is always there if needed.
GOD bless you.
Peace.

TellMeTheTruth

Salam,
The answer is yes! You pray or not, God's mind is ever changeable.
He writes رحمۃ upon himself then gets angry and punishes nations before qiyamah. He asks to face towards masjid al-haram and then says that every direction is for Him so there is no piety in facing mashriq or maghrib. He says give charity before consulting with the messenger then asks to stop this practice. There are many examples.
Sometimes, He answers your prayers but does the opposite of the requirement of His servants. For example mother of Mary prayed for a boy but was given a girl instead.
Peace!

peace TellMeTheTruth.

It is our interpretation/understanding of what GOD is saying that is ever changeable.
I am telling you the truth,
GOD bless you.

Peace TellMeTheTrruth.
Let me give you one example:
This is not the truth,quote:

"For example mother of Mary prayed for a boy but was given a girl instead."

Here is what she said:
إِذ قالَتِ امرَأَتُ عِمرٰنَ رَبِّ إِنّى نَذَرتُ لَكَ ما فى بَطنى مُحَرَّرًا فَتَقَبَّل مِنّى إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّميعُ العَليمُ
The wife of Amran said, "My Lord, I have dedicated what is in my belly(The baby I am carrying) to You, totally, so accept from me. You are Hearer, Omniscient."
i.e there is no mention of boy or girl or her asking for either?!!!

When she gave birth to her, she said, "My Lord, I have given birth to a girl" - God was fully aware of what she bore( and what every female bares) and that the tradition /preference and thinking of society is "The male is not the same as the female-( Most societies want to have boys instead of girls,this is a fact). I have named her Mary, and I invoke Your protection for her and her descendants from the rejected devil."

In fact she dedicated her to GOD and wanted her protected.

Or should GOD grant everyone their wish for boys ? The girls would be scarce in that case.

I hope you can see that the problem is us humans ,not GOD.
GOD bless you.

Salam!
Brother GL, thank you for my correction. Mary's mother did not actually prayed for a boy directly.
Peace!

good logic

Thank you TellMeTheTruth,

There are still a lot of verses that are not making sense to me and I am learning to do them justice by pondering/searching their meaning and hoping to stay patient with myself .
I know one thing for sure,most of what I thought Qoran was saying in the past has turned out to be false and was coming from my own assumption/interpretation or from believing/following interpretations of others.
May the Lord guide us all to do better.
GOD bless you.
Peace.
