[53:1-18] - The two manifestations of the Archangel Gabriel to Muhammad

Salam aleykoum,

This passage expresses the fact that Muhammad was convinced of his heavenly mission by the vision of the archangel of revelation. According to this passage, this visit by the Archangel Gabriel was made twice. On the first visit, no one doubts that the visit of the Archangel Gabriel took place here on earth, when he was positioned on the horizon. However, for the second visit, the vast majority of commentators place it in a celestial place, as shown by Muhammad Asad's translation :

   53:13 And, indeed, he saw him a second time
   53:14 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit,
   53:15 near unto the garden of promise.
   53:16 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour
   53:17 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray
   53:18 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols.

It seems to me more appropriate here to think that this is simply the second manifestation of the Archangel Gabriel to Muhammad at the 'the place-name called al-Muntahā' on the outskirts of Mecca, in a place known and indicated by the jujube tree in question.
The key expression is: raāhu nazlatan ukh'rā / he saw it on another descent. The term raāhu/he saw him evokes physical sight and not dreaming (this form leads to the perception of sight and visualizing by eyes or discerning intellectually.). The term ukh'rā/another clearly refers to the fact that, as on the first occasion, the Archangel Gabriel manifested himself during a descent of it and not during a hypothetical physical ascent of Muhammad.

Thus, my proposal of translation:

   53:13 And indeed, he saw him in another descent,
   53:14 by the jujube tree of l-muntahā,
   53:15 near unto the garden of l-mawā/the refuge.
   53:16 whilst the Lote Tree was covered with that which covered it (i.e. the Archangel Gabriel)
   53:17 [And withal,] the eye did not waver, nor yet did it stray.
   53:18 Truly He has seen from the great signs of his Lord.

أَفَتُمَٟرُونَهُۥ عَلَـىٰ مَا يَرَىٰ ١٢وَلَقَدْ رَءَاهُ نَزْلَةٙ أُخْرَىٰ ١٣عِندَ سِدْرَةِ ٱلْمُنتَـهَىٰ ١٤عِندَهَا جَنَّةُ ٱلْمَأْوَىٰٓ ١٥إِذْ يَغْشَىٰ ٱلسِّدْرَةَ مَا يَغْشَىٰ ١٦مَا زَاغَ ٱلْبَصَرُ وَمَا طَغَىٰ .١٧لَقَدْ رَأَىٰ مِنْ ءَايَٟتِ رَبِّهِ ٱلْـكُـبْـرَىٰٓ ١٨
Is it for reason that you people see not what he keep seeing, you people controvert with him (the Messenger) about him whom [Gib'raa'eil] he sees? [53:12] Be informed then about the fact, he (the Messenger) had indeed even seen him (Archangel Gib'raa'eil) on last sole occasion descending downwards— [53:13] He was descending from that Point of the Demarcated Ultimate Boundary/Horizon— [53:14] The Paradise: the Garden of Abode is situated by her side— [53:15] He saw him when the Pinnacle-the Demarcating Horizon was getting veiling by that which veiled it. [53:16] The Faculty of Vision did not decline, turn aside, or deviate from perceiving truth. And nor it bulged. [53:17] This is a certain fact that he (Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam) did observe the Greatest Sign of the Physical Realm of his Sustainer Lord. [53:18]

Allah the Exalted knew in advance that the enemies of the Elevated Messenger Muhammad Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam will fabricate imaginary stories to suppress his utmost exalted honour which is exclusive for him.  Referring to people's controverting, regarding his usual meetings with Gib'raa'eil alai'his'slaam, Allah the Exalted informs with emphasis of oath that what to say of meeting Gib'raa'eil alai'his'slaam on Earth, he [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] had even seen him once last time when he was ascending. This Ayah also indicates that Gib'raa'eil alai'his'slaam did not accompany him [Sal'lallaa'hoalaih'wa'salam] during his journey.

نَزْلَةٙ

Verbal Noun: indefinite; accusative. It denotes an instance-one time descending. This is the circumstantial clause of verb.  is an adjectival description about one time descending, last occasion.

The connection between Sura 53 and Sura 17 is highly speculative, with no basis or evidence for such a link. All Sura 53 says is that the angel Gabriel appeared a second time to confirm his first view. And it says so by saying that it happened just like the first time, here on earth, but in a different place and this time without revelation. This is what the text says, without adding any over-interpretation.
Remember that the arabic term "Mi'rāj" is absent from the Quran.

Firstly analyse Ayah 17:1 may be you get it as breaking news and then Sura 53 contains updates.

Ideally, but I won't have time to do it yet, would be to understand in which group of surahs this Surah 17 is located. A first glance suggests that a link exists between Surahs 16-17-18-19-20-21; but we will only know this after having finished the complete strucutural analysis of the Quran.
