Any experience with it? I know what Tor is, but never dared to get it on my pc. I just had to do do a research project on its political use. I was limited to journal articles and leaks of conspiracy theories. Skipped the whole creepy side of deep web. Came to know about it just a few days ago through youtube clips of a game called Sad Satan someone downloaded from Tor. Its creating a lot of buzz because its maker is unknown and its game concept is bizarre. You can read about it here: http://www.geek.com/geek-cetera/mysterious-deep-web-horror-game-sad-satan-has-terrified-and-confused-the-internet-1626825/

It got me curious. Had to do more research on other deep web stuffs. I limited myself to Youtube, Reddit and Google image to stay on the safe side and not lose my sanity. I do have a feeling that some  deep web images and youtube clips come from extreme/black metal music videos. But I can be wrong because I usually stay away from that specific sub genre. I am just familiar with how its videos are.

Anyways, interested in knowing from real users on how deep web is. Did you stumble upon anything creepy?

Warning for those who don't know about deep web: Don't go to explore it through Tor out of curiosity! It can get you in trouble if you are not being careful

Peace!

I never knew what Deep web is but you 've got me curious. Now I am going to take a crack at it because I have important political and religious research to do and the normal web is not getting me enough result for my searches.

TOR is an anti-censorship software that creates a "tunnel" through the Internet to remote machines somewhere else in the world to allow Internet users in countries with a heavy crackdown on its citizens' usage of the Internet to use it more freely. It has a highly political background. If, for example, Iran's authorities discover it on your computer they can confiscate your computer equipment and even arrest you and put you in jail, especially if they find something against the regime.

I learnt software capable of keeping visitors to deep web anonymous exist. Is it permissible to share these software in this forum?

I would strongly advise against using it.  Just using it will put you on the radar of pretty much every intelligence agency.  Maybe at some point in the past the tor network was quite hidden.  Those days are long gone though.  There is nu such p2p-network that is monitored as much by governments as the tor network.

There is no way for secure, anonymous internet.  This has almost evolved up to the point governments are voting laws in place that make it illegal for citizens to encrypt their data in a way that is inaccessible to the government.  This while the government has the privilege to encrypt any of its data.

One should also consider if one wants to contribute to a network that is also used by child molesters, drug lords, gun traffickers and every other type of criminal you can think of.  I know I don't want to tunnel for any such purposes on my computer.

As far as I know they are not illegal in my country, but perhaps in some other country. I think if it is illegal in the U.S. this forum will not allow it.

They basically makes your communication untraceable, but the machine acting host will get in trouble so it probably violates your terms with the VPN network if you do bad things.

Hello Reel,

Yeah, I know it and have used it. I got to knew about it recently and was so curious and excited to download it immediately. Once I downloaded and could use it, then I didn't really go much since I know it's there and won't go anywhere. So I am relax and not using it. Will use it when I want and when I feel like.

By the way, it's available on cell phone apps too like the IPhone ones and andriod Google play. I downloaded the internet Inbrowser. It automatically connects me to tor service as long as I have downloaded Orbot. I watched some shows from youtube through using this untraceable Internet app which connected to tor. Those shows on YT were blocked in my country. It connects you to different IPs, etc to make your location somewhere else, so I could watch those videos. I was just checking whether it makes your location, etc unknown or not as it claims.

As with anything, it can be used for good or bad reasons. I feel happy a place like deep web or tor exist because it can be useful for many people for many things. As for criminals, well they will find anything to use it to their advantage and will abuse it, no? We can't stop because of such people. With or without such web, they will find a way.

They say it keeps people anonymous. But I doubt it. I think its okay to share it here, but it can be accessed easily through Google also. My fiance told me to not get it since he knows some Tor user who got warning from his internet provider. He told me that sometimes linux OS comes with it.

I do agree with  runninglikezebras that it can get you red flagged by intelligence agencies.

Did you try liveleaks? It seems it has some deep web videos.
This one is my biggest fear

But there is something very strange about Tor. It came from US navy, now its 80 percent budget comes from our federal government, but why? I mean it seems to be a great hub for pedophilia ring and everything runninglikezebras mentioned above. I have little trouble believing in that whole Internet defense league thing.

I did read that it is not all that dark because it can give access to plenty of books and villainous classified documents of government. But they don't seem to make the majority of what deep web is all about.

Hi all,

Here's a concise article about the deep (or dark) web which may give you an idea:

http://www.popsci.com/dark-web-revealed

Tor used to be anonymous but lately it's been revealed that it's been compromised by US government agencies (such as NSA and FBI).

Thanks for the link Iceberg.

QuoteMuch of the Deep Web?s unindexed material lies in mundane data?bases such as LexisNexis
I didn't know this. I do use LexisNexis for academic research, but it never showed me anything creepy. Its maybe because I didn't use the creepy keywords  :P

QuoteIn mid-2014, a hacker created Grams, the Dark Web?s first distributed search engine. Grams allows would-be criminals to search for drugs, guns, and stolen bank accounts across multiple hidden sites. It even includes an "I?m Feeling Lucky" button and targeted ads where drug dealers compete for clicks.
:rotfl:

Found this below the article you gave me
http://www.popsci.com/google-self-driving-car-driverless-vehicle
lol, I saw it couple of months ago on our road. Had google roadmap sticker all over it. I thought it had something to do with road pictures. That thing on the top made the car look hideous.

Anyways, thanks for clarifying about the deep web compromise.
