As intoxicants which would cover drugs and alcohol is generally considered forbidden, what is the stance on narcotic painkillers? I use a narcotic pain killer which was prescribed by doctor for chronic tension headaches. What is your view and (if you are aware of such a judgement) what is the "traditional" view?

What is a "narcotic painkiller"? I've never heard of this term before.

What is a "narcotic painkiller"? I've never heard of this term before.

For example Vicodin is probably one of the best known Narcotic Painkillers which includes Hydrocodone which is derived from opiates. Or Fioricet which has butalbital in it which is a barbiturate. Essentially they contain medical grade narcotic drugs to treat severe pain and are only available by prescription.

Nah, it's too complicated for me. It's the word "narcotic" I am struggling with. Nevermind. Thanks, anyway.

I hope your headaches manage to clear of their own accord, so that you don't need the assistance of anything else.

Salaam.

Salaam ayyub,

I found this and it seems dangerous. It is better to go to some other place for a week or so to change your mind. Changing your mind is absolutely necessary at this time, as I already suffered from such things recently.

May Allah help and protect you :pr

Peace,

Unfortunately the best painkillers are narcotic substances, since they have a  heavy dampening effect on the nervous system, but if your pain is not bad I recommend something milder. It is easy getting addicted to such drugs.

If your pain is bad, God will surely forgive you if take narcotics for medical purposes. Just be careful with dosage and make sure you follow the doctor's recommendation.

These substances are not inherently forbidden: a scientific phrase that floats around is "The dose makes the poison". Ironically there is a hadeeth which explicitly nullifies that phrase; and another hadeeth that states "I was given the quran, and a hadeeth like it" despite the quran stating there is nothing like God's words, the best of hadeeth.

It is apparent that this destructive delusion has carried over into "quranist" thinking. God placed all substances on Earth for a defined purpose; they can all be used for goodness and badness.

In this case no, it is not forbidden to do such and such. Do as you please. The command is explicit: avoid intoxication, avoid satan, avoid mischief, avoid any evil conduct which is a direct effect of consuming any substances.

However have you ever given thought to the root cause of your symptoms? Muscle tensions, harbouring resentment, anger, arrogance, hard-heartedness, despairing in God, all sorts of spiritual illnesses result in chronic symptoms. It takes a meditative mind to piece apart one's life and observe the true cause of your illness; and certainly a man in a white coat could not tell you even if he had spent 200 years in medical school learning and learning. They do try, yet they fail relentlessly without exception. This is because the mind of man can be deceived by garnished desires for profit and greatness whether those desires originate from that soul or whether that soul is under the spell of other shayateen who seek to cause strife for their own temporary gain.

Throwing painkillers at such a thing will impede your spiritual progress and turn you away from God, and detach you from your individual sovereignty. God did not make us defective creatures, for each set of genetics there is a complementary environment in which those genes come to absolute fruition and reach their best potential; even what you would consider genetic "disorders" such as Downs syndrome. God does not make mistakes. Review your diet, review your activity levels, look deep within at all your emotions, repressed and surfaced. You shall be surprised by what you find. When you find the true source and make the necessary lifestyle change, all illnesses dissolve of their own accord.

If you are taking narcotic to get high, then I would say it is forbidden.  If you are taking narcotic to alleviate pain so you can function, then it is ok.  Why you are using it and for what reasons matters. Intentions matter.

I would though get second opinion about using narcotics for chronic headaches as they are rarely used.  Also chronic daily use of painkillers can lead to development of medication overuse headaches.  Have you tried other things like antidepressants, stress management, good posture, good sleeping and eating habits and exercise, and other non narcotic meds which your doctor should know about.

I have migraines.  I used to get them often but now are much less once I got rid of or distanced myself from negative people, started  eating healthier (smaller more frequent meals throughout the day) exercising regularly, good sleep.....seeking comfort in God.  Makes a big difference!

So I can smoke marijuana to alleviate horrible pains so that I can function? Even though some may consider marijuana an intoxicant, I can still take it because my intention is pure? Where does the Qur'an say this?

Salam, may Allah help you find a way around these headaches. You never know, the headaches may be a sign from Allah that your surroundings or lifestyle are having a detrimental effect on your body. Have you looked into avoiding things in your life that could promote your headaches (such as unneeded stress, caffeine, or even something as dumb as living too close to power lines). Chronic headaches are usually an indicator of some sort of unbalance in your life. Allah knows best.
