Peace All,
It struck me just now that If Ramadan means the hottest period, then surely different parts of the world will be celebrating their Ramadan depending on their hottest month. What do others think?
Dawn.

My personal opinion is ramadan should be according to when summer is where one lives because the restricted months for hunting should be in late summer/early autumn where one lives according to my understanding. May Allah correct me if I am wrong.

Salaams!

Peace dawngorgeous,

If I'm not mistaken, the root R-M-D according to classical Arabic dictionaries also has the meaning that describes the Sun's position as being at the furthest from Earth (I can't find the source, but Lane's Lexicon alludes to a time "about July" - summer solstice). Along with the fact that it means something like "scorching heat" (which can be throughout the summer period), the full-moon during this time happens once a year for the northern hemisphere and once a year for the southern hemisphere, respectively. So from what I see, the only differing of times would be between the two hemispheres.

Peace.
Now, we must all fear evil people. But there is another kind of evil which we must fear most, and that is the indifference of good people.

Salaam DawnGorgeous,

Yes indeed!

2:185 The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed AlQuraan, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

May Allah increase us in knowledge and guide us to His true path  :pr

That would make more sense, to put it in the perspective of each person, since that would mean people in different places would fast during different times of the Year ( To say, it would be mostly Northern Hemisphere timing Vs. Southern Hemisphere timing)...

Peace:

The Quranic version also presumably answers the oft-quoted question about 'what do you do if you are in the Arctic where the sun doesn't set for x months'. I presume the moon cycles are altered up there too, although getting information on Artic lunar cycles seems to be difficult, at least to me!
