I was wondering today about the history of Islam after watching The Message. The movie was very touching, and seemed to represent what Islam is meant to be and not what it has been portrayed by in the media and certain groups.

Are there any arabic historical documents that are reliable and correspond with some of what the hadith describes as history of the region?

I like the book Muhammad: A Prophet for Our Time by Karen Armstrong. She is not Muslim so it is not written from a hadith point of view. She is a historian and a good author, you might wanna look into it.

If you want Hadith try The Sealed Nectar. I found some area very contradicting. There is a part where Prophet Muhammad is making the people take pledges to protect him. Why did he not seek Allah's protection? Anyway it's an idea.

Not that I know of. There is no independednt historic accounts of Muhammad. As far as the movie the message Its very Sunni. Its one of those things that looks beautiful but can be poisonous. It takes years to detoxicate yourself from Sunni Islam. Many Koranist newbees do no understand that and are often very influenced by Sunni ways of thinking without knowing.
