The Forgotten "Cubes" of Yemen.
« on: January 16, 2012, 03:40:25 PM »
Good day to all.

I would like you all to take a close look at the following photos.

Recognize it?

Here's another one:

Where is the black cloth? Nowehere to be seen, of course, because this is not the Great Mosque of Mecca.  This is the Great Mosque of Ghamadan  , a.k.a the not-so-famous  "Kaaba of Sana'a", in the Yemeni Capital. This city predates Mecca by around 1,000 years.

Here's an areal view of the place:

Familiar architectural  pattern?

Take another look:

According to Islamic history (or should I say: Islamic hearsay), it was Prophet Muhammad who ordered some of his Sahaba to build this mosque in Yemen in the 6th Century of the Hijra  (The Hijra to Medina - in the opposite direction of Yemen, mind you), and that he "miraculously" guided the builders in such a way that the Yemeni mosque would accurately face their alledged Kaaba of Abraham in Mecca.

Well, if that's the case, then why the hell is there a cubical structure in its central courtyard?

I'd like an answer to that.

And what is the story of this Arabian fascination with cubes (Jinn blocks)?

Contemplate this please.

Next up, we look at the legendary "Kaaba of Najran"....

_______

Peace.

Peace,

I remember watching a show (I think it was Life of the Prophet Muhammad on BBC last year) and they mentioned about how the cube was a common thing throughout arabia.  Interesting to see you point this out.

Peace

Sorry, I made a mistake:

It was built in the 6th YEAR to the Hijra, not the 6th Century.

Appologize for this inconvenience.

Salaam

i think that those Cubes are the missing link for us to understand once for all that Mecca Cube is not the only Cube and most probably a copy of the Sanaa and Najran one...

Now if we have 1 cube, 2 cubes, 3 cubes, maybe theres a 4th, and a 5th..etc

But surely Najran and Sanaa are the oldest

Thanks again Pazuzu great "missing link" :sun:

Salaam :)

Shalom Aleikhom,

Great find. Very thought provoking. However, need some help, cant locate the mosque. Do you have the actual address ? Even better would be the GPS coordinates. Want to view it on google earth. All I can find is pictures such as these :(

Keep posting such interesting stuff. Thanks for sharing them. :)

Peace

Salaam dear brothers and sisters :sun:

I found something in my room about this Mosque in Yemen..

Its an article from N.Geographic Magazine (uUS Version) Vol125 no3 from MARCH 1964 that have a reportage about Yemen and a picture of this Kaaba with some people prostrating to MaKaa during Salat.

The discription of this picture says:

"Forheads pressed to the ground, Sana? Moslems kneel for Friday morning at Al-Kabir Mosque,Yemen`s holiest and one of the oldest and most venerated in the entire Moslem World. The stone Kaaba in the courtyard ( :hmm) once rivaled Mecca`s shrine ( :hmm)as a pilgrimage center. The muezzin`s melodic cry of Allahu Akbar, which means "God is Greatest", echoesacross the landfive times each twenty-four hours at sunset."

by Thomas J. Abercrombie, National Geographic foreign staff/photos by the author

So..We have The stone Kaaba in the courtyard ofAl-Kabir Mosque vs Mecca`s shrine?

Hope it helps:D sorry but i couldnt post respective picture maybe ill take a photo to magazine and post latly if someone really want it :sun:

Salaam
