Although this is an 'old thread' yet it's an interesting and important question.
If the question is: What happened to the consciousness when the body fell to sleep (or disabled such as in physical death)?

Concur, it depends on the 'state' of the consciousness.
That's the reason why everything that you do, think, feel will have an impact towards your own soul.
"Whoso doeth right, it is for his soul, and whoso doeth wrong, it is against it." (45:15)
