What are ghosts?

I was talking about ghosts with my mum, mainly telling her stories about them from my life yesterday and then we discussed what they are exactly.

She is of the opinion that no soul comes back as a spirit haunting a place and that those that we call 'ghosts' are actually jinns out to trick people. I'm inclined to believe that school of thought and also that certain places 'record' an event if the energy is strong enough which explains why some people can see a ghost repeatedly jumping to his/her death, scenes of a battlefield and especially stories which involve a loved one coming back to look for something or just sit in his/her favourite chair at certain times of the day.

Though I am generally skeptical of the supernatural, I do grudgingly believe, somewhat, due to my experiences. Those tv programmes like "Is it real?" where scientists test supernatural phenomenon keeps up the skepticism and also, I do understand that just saying "It happened before" isn't exactly quantifiable evidence that can be tested.

But then again, atheists have been saying the same thing about God so...

The impression theory is pretty much a fancy way of expressing what a spirit is anyway, I think.
I mean there are a million ways to define "spirit", right? Or anything, for that matter.

I am not sure anyone can have a definitive idea of what a ghost or spirit (in that context) is. You and your mother may well be right, on the other hand I have heard that a ghost is a soul that refuses to move on because they feel that they need to do something first, or that they do not realise they are dead. Who knows?

heard the same thing.
ghosts could be just left over energy in that place. perhaps that's we hear of ghosts haunting houses they lived in. or places they experienced extreme emotions, like death, pain, suffering... they don't go next door, they stay in that house.

or yes, they could be souls that don't realize they're dead and are stuck here, that could also be considered state of "hell". or yes, maybe they need to do something first, after all, death is nothing more then a shift, right now we're tuned into this frequency, and each night we shift into another, willingly or unwillingly, when we sleep. and death is about the same, we just shift, only that we don't have bodies to swich back to.  yet if souls are extremly attached to this world they may be in that frequency level closest to our earth one, i compare it to when you set channels on tv and you're tuning and you stop between channels, you see a little of one channel and a little of another, you know.
that's why we sometimes get glimpses or see shadows and such.
