i wanted to ask you if you knew anything about the quranic verse 34:14

34:14Transliteration Falamma qadayna AAalayhi almawta ma dallahum AAala mawtihi illa dabbatu al-ardi ta/kulu minsaatahu falamma kharra tabayyanati aljinnu an law kanoo yaAAlamoona alghayba ma labithoo fee alAAathabi almuheeni

Then, when We decreed death for him, nothing informed them of his death until a worm kept eating from his staff, so when he fell down, the Jinn realised that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in the humiliating retribution.

My question would be for you this:

the verse says if the jinn realised the unseen...isnt the jinn suppossed to be the "unseen" so do you think this signifies that jinn are not in the category of "unseen"

but perhaps in reference to the previous "worm"

also please note on the verse talking about moses throwing his staff down the arabic word is jinn correct but the translation says serpent do you think there is a correlation between jinns being some sort of "serpent or insect family?

Also does anyone know the classification of worms and serpents are in what family?

amanda

here is a link about animal classification

http://www.indianchild.com/animal_kingdom.htm

also it appears worms are invertebrates and snakes are vertebrates

so is it possible someone mistranslated the meaning of the serpent which could have been worm since they appear alike in movement

also interestingly there are alot of diseases from the worm family since i think they eat bacteria

what is your guys takes on this issue

Hi there and Salaam to you Amanda.

Its highly unlikely that the Jinns were worms as the Quran says of their substance/creation, as such:

015.027 And the Jinn race, We had created before, from the fire of a scorching wind.

They have freewill just like us:

018.050 Behold! We said to the angels, "Bow down to Adam": They bowed down except Iblis. He was one of the Jinns, and he broke the Command of his Lord. Will ye then take him and his progeny as protectors rather than Me? And they are enemies to you! Evil would be the exchange for the wrong-doers!

They have independent capability of freewill to do things just like us:

027.039 Said an 'Ifrit, of the Jinns: "I will bring it to thee before thou rise from thy council: indeed I have full strength for the purpose, and may be trusted."

They also receive revelations & messengers from God, just like us:

006.130 "O ye assembly of Jinns and men! came there not unto you apostles from amongst you, setting forth unto you My signs, and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say: "We bear witness against ourselves." It was the life of this world that deceived them. So against themselves will they bear witness that they rejected Faith.

They were also worshipped as God just the like humans were (Christ, Sai Baba, Buddha):

006.100 Yet they make the Jinns equals with God, though God did create the Jinns; and they falsely, having no knowledge, attribute to Him sons and daughters. Praise and glory be to Him! (for He is) above what they attribute to Him!

salam alaykum wr wb

is there any evidence of how the worm is formed? i mean molecularly speaking?

what about the serpent jinn thing in the Quran? could that mean jinns are serpents or snakes or is that possibly metaphorical in nature?

Hi amanda,

In addition to arnold yasins thread, you can check whether "worms" fit in the variouses verses where jinn is used:

Peace,

The Quran is a source of guidance, and i don?t believe ?worms? is really meant with jinn. But it was also used for insects and other creatures that were rarely seen, so yes, but there is not a verse in the Quran were it will find by my point of view. jinn is a description of an attribute, not a title of one species. So anything that is rarely seen or hidden which fits the context can be applied. But i don?t believe worms do fit those contexts. But please don?t think jinn can only mean one thing as then you fall into the trap most people fall....
