General Issues / Questions / Re: Socrates's Question
« on: September 11, 2007, 08:18:36 PM »
I didn't read through all the posts in the thread, so I apologize if someone already mentioned this. We're told that Good and Evil are different things, but are they really? They are two poles of the same magnet, Good needs evil to exist, just as the opposite is true. The fun in life is that it appears that Evil is going to always overtake the Good, this is the drama, but this will never happen. Just as Chaos doesn't overtake Order, and Nothing doesn't overtake Something, so too, evil doesn't overtake Good. They are just opposite ends of the same thing. If you didn't hear silence in between sounds, you would never hear music, and if you didn't experience death, you wouldn't know what life is.

Thought I'd add a quote from the Tao Te Ching:

Fine weapons are instruments of evil. All creatures hate them. Therefore, followers of the way do not use them... To rejoice over victory by violence is to rejoice over slaughter. He who rejoices over slaughter cannot unite all within the empire... The wise ruler sees a military triumph as a funeral.

Off-Topic / Re: Meditation

Hey Angel,
I also found meditating to be hard at first, but like Zenje said over time you get better at quieting the mind. I don't believe people should look at it as a chore though, it should be something fun. One thing that really helped me overcome my difficulties with meditating was to use Hemisync. You can download the torrent for this at and then search for Hemisync. Usually it costs a lot of cash, but if you have no problems with downloading torrents  (maybe just to try it out before buying it), you can get it there. It's an audio program designed to gradually take you through meditation and trance states. I find it works well.

daaamn Pheonix for 17 you're hella smart. I see more wisdom in you than many people (including myself), keep up the good work.

I really don't like to preach hate, but I cannot take it when these acts are committed under the guise of religion. I don't give a shit if god personally came down and told me to stone someone .... I wouldn't do it. I'd rather burn in hell then participate in that bullshit.  When will they come to their senses?!

Peace All,
The very fact that people get worked up about how others use terms demonstrates the fact that we are being divisive (hope thats a word). I could care less if you want to call yourself a muslim, or a submitter. Do you think God really cares about what you label yourself? Maybe I shouldn't even get involved in this discussion since I don't take the quran/reading/recitation as my only source, hell, life itself means a lot more to me than words in a book. I find it amazing that people think the experiences they have are less important than words written down. What makes you think there is a right answer to these questions?

Peace Idolfree1,
Just wanted to say as usual great post. The needle trying to prick itself.

Peace Ansi,
Yeeep I must be the devil incarnate. I'm not an atheist though, but you can label me anything you want. Maybe you're right and I should take my views to another forum, but I've been reading this forum for years now and it's kinda stuck with me. If everyone told me to leave I'd have no hard time doing it, I just find having discussions with some of these people on the board very insightful.

Peace Arnold,
I never looked at it in the figurative sense, and apparently I should have. Thanks for that.

Peace Elke,
LOL I like what you did to overcome the peace peace problem, pretty creative. Yes the verse wasn't about a human killing another human, but rather a messenger or an angel killing a human. However, it still seems that according to the Quran the killing of this person was alright due to the future actions that the youth would have taken.  I suppose if god were to directly ask you to kill someone you would be justified in doing it, but maybe god only asks the angels to do the killing. This story has always stood out for me in the Quran because it doesn't seem to be consistent with the idea of free-will.
