I think sunnah is just the abstract concept indicating the prophets authority.

Many people see this authority written into the message of the Quran.

The hadith is an effort to transmit that concept via oral and written traditions following various methodologies.

I feel like sunnah is above and beyond hadith. I see it in a similar way to sharia and fiqh. Fiqh is the human understand of God's Sharia.

peace, friend.

I don't believe hadith offer a detail explanation of salah, either. You'll find isolated narrations here and there like "I saw the prophet pray with his hands here" or "so and so said the prophet would do this many rakat during this or that salah"

The standard form(s) of salah whether sunni, shia, ibadi comes down via tradition, not hadtih. If anything it's passed down within madhabs.

Thank you for your responses. I'll check out the link, Wakas I don't know if there's any written parchments in arabic before the Quran that would be pretty cool though.

From my understanding pre islamic epigraphy is an emerging field of study although I think a lot of it is still being deciphered due to regional variety. I'd be interested if any scholar of the field finds anything... I'd imagine there must be something in the whole of arabia seeing how central the concept is in the Quran.

Archeology & History / Salat pre Quran

Is there any pre Muhammad evidence in poetry or epigraphy of the use of Salah? Or even in Syrian sources I think it'd be cool if we had anything that indicated how the arabs or surrounding people thought about the concept.

Off-Topic / peak oil

What are some opinions of peak oil in the forum?

How do you think peak oil will affect the islamicate identity and politics in the next century? Do you think Muslim lands will revert back to the ways of pre industrial organization or will a new system arise? What would you like to see personally?

peace friends.

The verse youre referring to does not use the word "this book" it says 'Al kitab' or 'The Book' which is not equivalent to Al Quran/ The Recital.

Al Quran is described as a tafseel of Al Kitab so I don't think it's accurate to equate the two though it is a common mistake made in both traditional and modern interpretations.

peace Noon,

Thanks for the reply. I should have specified I was thinking non quranic manuscripts.

Manuscripts that may reference Quranic concepts but more like the earliest records of the muslim community outside of the Quran. Maybe legal or even reverential.
