Off-Topic / Re: Dreams!
October 13, 2011, 06:19:47 PM
If one takes the entire Qur'an to be the truth, then we cannot rule out the possibility of some dreams being prophetic, as in the case of Prophet Yusuf/Joseph. However, I would not say that all dreams come true. I've had some dreams that were seemingly meaningless, like some dreams I've had of doing the same things I do daily and that were not out of the ordinary. Some were entertaining and fantastical, like childhood dreams about flying on the back of a unicorn (lol). I've had some dreams, however, that seemed to be warnings. I do not like to talk about them, as they were frightening and for some reason, I feel that I should never speak of them (superstition?).

Regardless, according to the Qur'an, our souls are taken when we are asleep.

"Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought." [39:42]

While our souls are in an unknown place, it may be possible that our dreams may also be affected by God or at times by the Unseen/the place that our soul is at that time.

May Peace be upon you.

I'm glad to hear that you will study the Qur'an even further. I've been on studyquran and find the site very helpful. I too am aiming to study the Qur'an. May God guide us onto the Straight Path and increase us in knowledge and faith, if He so wills.

I don't know why I haven't checked in on this topic for a while. Thank you for your reply Wakas.  :sun:

Bump. I would like feedback from an admin, if possible. I think that my request is more than reasonable considering how many African Muslims there are.

Jinn & the Paranormal / Re: Fallen angel or angels?

In christianity/judaism there seems to be the concept that 2/3's of the heavenly host of angels fell from grace with God and lost their wings when thrown out of paradise to join Satan on earth and in hell. However, in Islam there seems to be the concept that only the angel that became Satan fell from grace, lost its wings, and became the devil and leader of the jinn.

I'm trying to understand this nuance so please correct me if I'm mistaken...

Actually, according to Islam, Satan was never an angel - he is an entirely different being from angels. We believe that there are angels, who are made of light, obedient to God, yet they have no free will and therefore cannot disobey God. Jinni are beings made of fire, and have free will. Satan is a jinn and used to be pious and was at the same ranks of some angels. Humans also have free will. Therefore, according to Islam, it's not possible for angels to fall from grace.

Peace,

I think that it would be good to have an African section too. I am in South Africa. Neh22, where are you?

Imraan

May peace be upon you.

Thank you for your response Imraan. :)
I live in Canada but my family came from Somalia so I identify strongly with Africa. I would like to get to know Qur'an only Muslims from all over, including Muslims from Africans cultures. I think it would be nice to have an African section here - after all, Islam is the biggest religion in Africa. If you don't mind me asking, how did you come to choosing to follow the Qur'an only and are there many such Muslims in South Africa?

lol Yes, it is a mistake. I meant "also reject the hadith".  :P

Wa Alaykum Al Salaam :welcome:

Great story. I agree, reading the Quran carefully clearly exposes Hadith and other man made systems.

Thank you. Indeed! If only others chose to evaluate the Truth carefully for themselves!

Rana, I totally agree. I hope you weren't implying that I was community focused instead of scripture focused. That would be a tragedy!  :peace: I really like Buddhists too! :)

Neh22, the view of Baha'u'llah is very complicated and I will get to that in a minute. I want to clarify the meaning of his name. It is actually Arabic for "the Glory of G-d", and has nothing to do with the Bab, except for that part where they say that the Bab foretold of his arrival. They compare the Bab to John the Baptist and actually refer to Baha'u'llah as the literal second coming of Jesus, and therefore the "Madhi", and actually the one foretold of EVERY religion ever, which is quite a lot! :)

As for what manifestation means in the Baha'i Faith, well, it is quite complicated and the whole explanation can be found here:
http://www.bahai.com/Bahaullah/Bahaullah7.htm

Please read that page and tell me what you get from it. From my point of view it seems to be saying that all prophets are men, all are more special than men, they are all the same light (nur) for the world, and they are G-d--except they aren't fully G-d, just a bit of G-d, but still G-d. And this page is a good example of what I was saying about Baha'u'llah's writings earlier: they are extremely verbose. And all of his stuff I have read so far is very Shia-Sufi, and nothing really new (he quotes a lot of Shia hadith) in the books I have read so far. :peace:
:sun:

Thanks for your reply. I have to say though, captainneckbeard's response to it echoes my own thoughts on it.

Christianity/Judaism/Others / Re: What are Christians?

Salaam alaykum.

As a submitter, you should not indulge in gossip nor should you insult others. That's not the way of Islam. This is just a peaceful reminder to please adhere to the Qur'an:

"And the servants of Allah are those who walk on the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them, they say:
"Peace" [Qur'an 25:63]

"And when they hear vain talk, they turn away therefrom and say: "to us our deeds and to you yours; peace be to you." [Qur'an 28: 55]

So even when provoked, we must only act and speak in peace but it does not seem that you provoked and yet you are not acting in accordance to the Qur'an. May God guide us all, if He so wills.
