I came across this thread by chance while doing a search via Google. According to the Quran, the plural form YaTaMa is masculine, since the unambiguous pronouns referring to them are masculine.

If hajj is debate, then why do we need to shave our heads for just a debate???

I have not been here since few years... I came accross this discussion by chance.

Here is my brief answer:

Hajj is annual conference where peacemakers discuss social, political and economic issues among themselves. Participants should be groomed. Long hair and beard might be difficult to clean and might create lice, etc problem... The instructions and prohibitions during hajj conference have good reasons RELEVANT to the event.

My colleague Kassim Ahmad has been arrested at age 81 for criticizing the professional religious class, be it Sunni or Shiite. It is shame for Malaysia to punish a brave intellectual for criticizing hadith and professional religious class, which prime cause of backwardness, ignorance, violence and oppression in the so-called muslim world. Kassim has very limited income and I lost communication with him several years ago due to his email being hacked by the followers of the sunni clerics.

One of the oldest pages of a manuscript in Egypt's National Museum in Cairo spells the WAHiD with Alif in verse 37:4.

This demonstrates that devils while adding numerous Alifs in manuscripts (not the quran, a numerically coded book!) they subtracted one from WAHiD.

Folios contains Surahs Ya-Sin, 72-83 and Al-Saffat, 1-14. Script: Mashq (one of the earliest dated Qur'anic manuscripts and written on vellum. The vowels are indicated by red dots and diacritical by short strokes. No aya markers and no surah headings). Location: Egyptian National Library, Cairo, Egypt.

It contains Surah division and most likely the aya markers are not visible because the quality of the picture is low; they are usually done with ink in light color.

The "WAHiD" is the second word from the left end of the 4th line in the second page (Saffat 37:4).
