General Issues / Questions / Quranic Word
October 17, 2021, 10:24:21 PM
Salam all,

In The Quran and in Arabic language, often there is a singular "you" and a plural "you".

1. Can you please elobrate the difference usage of the singular and plural?

2. In the Quran are there also ayat that is directed towards a certain groups/ individual and nobody else?

3. So if the ayat is directed towards The Prophet is it also applicable to everybody?

Thank you.

General Issues / Questions / Ramadhan 2:185
May 15, 2017, 10:58:49 PM

Salam all,

In Sura 2: 185 the verse is talking about Ramadhan, and since the month of Ramadhan is coming just around the corner, I thought of giving my 2 cents understanding of this verse. Much have said and argued about this verse, below is my understanding and I post it here to get your critic and feedback.

The translations from Shahih are as follows:
Sahih International: The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify Allah for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.

In fact, most translations translate it as ?The month of Ramadhan?.?

Shahar can both means month or moon.

And ramadhan can also mean ?intensely hot?.

Am I correct on this? ( I am not from Arabic background, sorry If I am wrong)

So the unconventional translations could also be ?The moon of ramadhan or Intensely hot moon?..?. If we look from astronomy, the meaning of intensely hot moon occurs when it is directly lighted (heated) by the sun and when viewed from earth it is during Full Moon.
So I would translate this to mean ? The moon of Ramadhan? ? as

?The full moon in which was revealed the Quran, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights the moon (full moon), let him fast it (ie the next day); and whoever is ill or on a journey ? the an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and {wants} for you to complete the period (count)  and to glorify Allah for that {to} which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.?

From these translations my understanding would be when we sight the full moon we should fast the next day and to complete the period (count) means to complete the count of the moon/month which is 12 days in a year (12 full moon and 12 days fasting in a year).

Well, this is my post and understanding, which I hope to get some comments from you. I am a newbie here so be gentle  :)   and give some slacks If I am wrong on this.

Thank you.
