Far in the Horizon

The interpretation of the first verse of Al-Isra’a chapter reads:

“Most glorified is the One who summoned His servant during the night, from the Sacred Mosque to the farthest Mosque, whose surroundings we have blessed, in order to let him see some of our signs. He is the Hearer, the Seer.” [17:1]

What are the signs that the Prophet saw?

As Muslims, only a sincere examination of the Quran offers any real opportunity to envision the signs that the Prophet saw during his summoning. As always, let us start by finding the other places in the Quran that talk about those particular signs.

Halal & Haram

How many times have you heard this phrase: "This is Haram, That is Halal"!

If you are a Muslim, then you probably hear these words repeated around you every day. You will hear them in school, you will hear them on TV, you will hear your parents say them, you will hear scholars and Imams say them, and, you will find tons of books written on the subject.

Just click on any of the traditional Islamic Web Sites and read any Q&A or Fatwa section they may have. You should find something like this (someone actually asked this question in an Islamic site):

"Is it Halal to eat in a Microwave in which Pork has been heated?"

Evolution and the Qur'an

Recently, within the past couple of decades, there has been a revival of the debate between evolutionism and creationism. By creationism, believing that God created life without the process of evolution, is meant. The Christian creationists believe that God directly created life from clay. The process by which He created the world is not explainable, according to them, because the laws involved were not the same as the existing laws of the universe. Many Muslims are left wondering where they should stand on this topic. Almost every educated Muslim believes in the evolution of lower life forms, but not as many believe in the evolution of man. Do they believe this because of the Qur'an, or because they were fed these beliefs by their parents and teachers?

Honey: A Gift From God

16:68- Wa 'awhaa Rabbuka 'ilan nahli 'anitta-khithi minal-ji-baali buyuutanwwa minash-shajari wa mimmaa ya'-ri-shuun;

16:68- and your Lord revealed to the Bee saying: Make hives in the mountains and in the trees and in that which they (people) build;

16:69- Thumma kulii min kullith-thamaraati faslukii subula Rabbiki thululaa. Yakhruju min-butuunihaa sharaabum-mukhtalifun 'alwaanuhuu fiihi shifaa-'ul-linaas: 'inna fii thaa-lika la-'Aayatalli-qawminy-ya-tafakkaruun.

16:69- then eat of all the fruits and walk in the ways of your Lord submissively. There comes forth from within it (the bee) a beverage of many colors, in which there is healing for men; most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect.

Which Qur'an?

Disclaimer. The reader is strongly advised to independently verify all information given as per 17:36.

All Muslims are taught from a very early age that the Quran is a perfectly preserved book and that God has taken it upon himself to guard each verse, word, and letter of the Quran from any errors or changes:

“Indeed it is We who have sent down the Reminder, and indeed it is We who will preserve it.” (Quran 15:9)

However, one of the least discussed or debated subjects amongst Muslims and even amongst students of the Scripture are the variant texts of the Quran, namely: Hafs & Warsh.

The Role of Science in the Qur'an

In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the alternation of night and day, there are signs for men of understanding,- They remember God while standing, sitting, and on their sides, and they reflect upon the creation of the heavens and the earth: "Our Lord, You did not create all this in vain. Be You glorified. Save us from the retribution of Hell. (3:190-191)

Science Vs. religion has always been a polemic. In the present day the impression of science is something that should be taken away from religious belief. However, many of today's Muslims are looking back to the romantica of the Muslim scientist legacy (700 - 1500 C.E.) when science, astronomy and mathematical discoveries were contributed by Muslims scientist before the European Renaissance.

Most of the points in this article are taken from the book "Holy Quran and the science of nature".

Obey God & The Messenger

Many people site the Quraanic Verses that command us to Obey Allah and Obey the Messenger, and say that Obeying Allah and obeying the Messenger are two different things - Obeying Allah is to obey the Quraan and obeying the Messenger is to obey the books of Hadith. They point that if obeying the Messenger was the same thing as obeying Allah's Quraan, then Allah would have only said Obey Allah. These people say that Allahs inclusion of obey the Messenger implies that the Messenger is saying EXTRA things outside of the Quraan that we must obey.

The thing that many proponents of Hadith forget is that Allah does not leave it to speculation as to what the people are to obey. The Ayaat do not end at Obey Allah and obey the Messenger, but they continue to include what the duty of the Messenger is:

And obey Allah and obey the messenger and be cautious; but if you turn back, then know that only a clear deliverance of the message is (incumbent) on Our messenger <wa ma_ alar rasu_li il lal balaghul mubin (5:92)

Jesus: Dead or Alive?

The accepted faith of most of the Muslims is that Jesus(pbuh) is alive in the Heaven. According to them Jews wanted to kill him on the cross and Allah raised him alive in the Heaven.

If you are one of the Muslims who believe in the faith mentioned above, you need to read along the rest of the discussion.

May I ask you: 'do you have evidence from the Quran to support your conviction that Jesus(pbuh) is alive and that he was raised alive?' Most probably you don’t have evidence. You simply relied on an accepted opinion of the majority Muslims. Quite a few of you will come up with evidence(s) and that makes the entire discussion so much interesting.

I seek refuge in God from Satan the rejected / In the name of God, Most Gracious Most Merciful

And preach with this (Quran) to those who reverence the summoning before their Lord - they have none beside Him as a Lord and Master, nor an intercessor - that they may attain salvation. [6:51]

[39:43-44] Have they invented intercessors to mediate between them and GOD? Say, "What if they do not possess any power, nor understanding?" Say, "All INTERCESSION belongs to GOD." To Him belongs all sovereignty of the heavens and the earth, then to Him you will be returned.

Submitters (Muslims) Vs. Believers (Mumins)

Are you a Muslim (Submitter) or a Mu'min (Believer)?

The above question may seem 'irrelevant' for most people who follow the Quran, but by the end of this article (God Willing) you will realize just how important it is to know what is required of you by the Almighty.

The terms 'Muslim' & 'Mumin' are used interchangeably by Islamic societies and almost everyone who is a 'Muslim' is also regarded as a 'Mumin' by their standards.
