9;2 and 9;5 its best to read the whole surah 9 to understands the concept properly.
Salaam

My interpretation was based on 22.36... but how far can we stretch our "reason"... I'm just wondering why even have "Qurban"? Who 'created' it to be on this day and for this to happen.. we cannot use Abraham's story for justification...

Peace

Keeping in mind animals AND humans have ruh..

Peace
Salaam
We are allowed to eat animals but not humans. As for what ruh is this is a different subject; Allah blew His Ruh into Adam, but there is no mention of animals having received the same favour.
2:216 ........But it is possible that ye dislike a thing which is good for you, and that ye love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knoweth, and ye know not.

God bless you

Well may Allah guide me to have a greater understanding... but if I cannot find no specific mention to perform Qurban then I shall not perform it.

Thanks Farida,

If anyone else would like to contribute, feel free.

If we take a look at why a lot of people actually do Qurban is because it's just a known tradition (exactly like Christmas). I'm in the dilemma of the 'mass' amount of slaughtering for one individual day, not slaughtering in general on a normal sacrificial level (not a day-to-day-eating-meat level).

Peace :peace:

I'm not sure I understand what "mass slaughtering" means.
However,

37:102   And when he grew enough to work with him, he said: My son, I am seeing in a dream that I am sacrificing you. What do you think? He said: O my father, do what you are commanded to do. You will find me, God willing, patient.
37:103   So when they both had submitted, and he was laid by his forehead.
37:104   And We called him: O Abraham,
37:105   You have carried out the vision. It was such that We rewarded the righteous.
37:106   Surely, this was an exacting test.
37:107   And We ransomed him with a great animal sacrifice.
37:108   And We kept his history for those who came later.
37:109   Peace be upon Abraham.
37:110   It is thus that We reward the righteous.

I'm curious what do you think the bold part refers to? I mean, not just you, anyone on the board. Maybe I didn't understand it very well.

Salaams.

No. I've never done Qurban.. and never wanted to.. and had a debate with someone else about it. To be honest my definition of hajj may be different to yours but I believe it can be a local event where all different members of mankind gather up to witness the benefits of serving the One God and as a normal gathering would usually have, a feast would take place. I think... what probably bugs me the most is the 'traditional' way that things are happening: The "hajj" I see today is something I do not partake nor agree with. The reasoning behind a lot of people for doing Qurban is unsound and loosely upsetting... because it's simply being portrayed as completely a day devoted to animal sacrifice, whereas hajj does otherwise but to me feasting is obviously included in this as a subsidary. But "hajj" is described in the Quran, and Qurban does not exist in the context which most 'traditionalists' present it as. Qurbanan comes from the root Q-R-B which in every case relates to "nearness, closeness, kinship". The same word is also used in 46.28 where it means "a means to get closer to"... this is my problem.

Selam,

No idea how you get the translation of "ANIMAL" sacrifice to be perfectly honest. A MUCH better translation of this is:

37:107 We exchanged his life for a Momentous Sacrifice.

[Please notice here the absence of the Biblical and the traditional myth of a 'ram' sent from the heavens. Also, note that slaughtering of a sheep or goat, by no means, can be considered a Momentous Sacrifice. 14:37, 37:102]

If you read the transliteration more carefully and compare it with the classical arabic meanings you will see this was clearly inserted as "ANIMAL" sacrifice to satisfy the historical traditions.

37:108 And We left for him remembrance among the later generations.

I used translation from this site. http://free-minds.org/quran/PM/37

Anyway, reading other translations, it seems that 37:108 refers to the next verse (109).

Allah knows best.  :)

Selam Shirin,

Yeah I eventually realised that was the Free Minds translation, however I do not agree with it. And yes, precisely. 37:108 relates to 37:109 and it was a story to remember because of its morals and great courageousness on Abraham's behalf. I simply cannot find any indication that God is telling us to have a day of vast animal sacrifice because of this story.
