You talk like a Sunni. Most people here are not Sunnis so don't expect a Sunni reply.

I do not see Islam as a religion. I see it more like a attitude towards Everything in life. Hence you can marry anyone whether he calls himself a Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Jew or whatever. Just make sure that he does good deeds, that he is a good human being who respect to others and you.

Please refer to surah Baqra 2:221 which states that you shall not marry a mushrik. In other words: if a "Muslim" boy is a mushrik you cannt marry him but if a Jewish boy isn't a mushrik you are free to Marry him.

Hope that helps. May god guide us all.

Peace,

Maha, I thought a believer can only marry a believer and he/she is prohibited from marrying a non-believer.

Can someone please shed some light onto this.

Regards

I was just thinking about this myself earlier... If I got married further down the line (I am currently in the process of divorce) how in the world would I find a Muslim man who doesn't follow hadith?  We seem so far and few between from what I have gathered.

Maha has a great point, though. You are probably going along with the Sunni teaching which is that a Muslim woman can only marry a Muslim man.  What is the definition of a Muslim...what does the word mean?  I was taught "One who submits to the will of God."  When I look at it that way, I see things in a totally different light.  If I look at it the mainstream Islam way, I get "One who believes in and follows the teachings of the Prophet Muhammed."  I now believe that is not what makes one a Muslim, although I do believe that one must accept him as a Prophet and the one to which the Qu'ran was revealed.

I personally would marry someone who shares the same faith as I, to avoid any kind of cultural clashes down the line.  But Allah (swt) knows best.

And do not marry the female polytheists until they believe. For
a believing female servant is better than a polytheist even if she
attracts you. And do not marry the male polytheists until they
believe. For a believing male servant is better than a polytheist
even if he attracts you. Those invite to the Fire, while God is
inviting to the Paradise and forgiveness by His consent. He
clarifies His revelations for the people that they may remember.

I know of Christians who don't believe that Jesus is son of God.  They are called Unitarians.
