I was always told it was "God Consciousness"   My understanding of it is that we are aware/more conscious of God in the things we do, see, say, etc.

Peace all.

I agree with scaredmuslimah.   Takwa means  being aware of GOD all the time.( Valuing the Greatness and Omnipotence of GOD.)

Mazhar, your litmus test does not make sense? I did not understand it.

I mean how can you " humble your voice in the presence of the prophet" when he is dead?

That was a requirement when he was alive!

Peace.

Humbling the voice does not denote that you should not look like a donkey in your speech. It means demonstrate reverence and respect.

Salaam,

My understand of taqwa is as follows:

9:115 وَ مَا کَانَ اللّٰہُ لِیُضِلَّ قَوۡمًۢا بَعۡدَ اِذۡ ہَدٰىہُمۡ حَتّٰی یُبَیِّنَ لَہُمۡ مَّا یَتَّقُوۡنَ ؕ اِنَّ اللّٰہَ بِکُلِّ شَیۡءٍ عَلِیۡمٌ

Sahih International: And Allah would not let a people stray after He has guided them until He makes clear to them what they should avoid. Indeed, Allah is Knowing of all things.

Pickthall: It was never Allah's (part) that He should send a folk astray after He had guided them until He had made clear unto them what they should avoid. Lo! Allah is Aware of all things.

Yusuf Ali: And Allah will not mislead a people after He hath guided them, in order that He may make clear to them what to fear (and avoid)- for Allah hath knowledge of all things.

Shakir: It is not (attributable to) Allah that He should lead a people astray after He has guided them; He even makes clear to them what they should guard against; surely Allah knows all things.

Muhammad Sarwar: God does not misguide a nation after having given them guidance until the means of piety are made known to them. God knows all things.

Mohsin Khan: And Allah will never lead a people astray after He has guided them until He makes clear to them as to what they should avoid. Verily, Allah is the All-Knower of everything.

Arberry: God would never lead a people astray after that He has guided them, until He makes clear to them as to what they should be godfearing; surely God knows everything.

Taqwa = To Avoid or to Guard Against [whatever is asked to].

Hope this may help inshaAllah.

May Allah increase us in knowledge and guide us to His true path  :pr
