Salam aleikum.
I would like to share this important event with all the people who have welcome me in this forum the first time. I have met really kind persons and with them I started to talk about freedom and peace. As a conversation that ideally continues I would like to let them know about this victory of the people against the hidden powers of corruption. Dear friends, this is the demonstration that, if people really want, they can get by, they can win if they stand all together.
Let me thank you all, once again, and let me say goodbye to you all with the salutation phrase that I've learned from my friends in Iran.

MOST PART OF THE ILVA STEELWORKS HAVE BEEN CLOSED: A VICTORY FOR US ENVIRONMENTALISTS
Taranto, July 26, 2012 - The investigating judge of Taranto, Patrizia Todisco, has issued a bold and admirable restraint measure, preventing the use of the entire ‘hot-working’ area of the ILVA steel plant. The reason stands in the fact that "The plant has caused and continues to cause disease and death, also for children: those who manage the steelworks have continued in those polluting activities with consciousness, aiming only to their own profit, trampling on the most elementary rules of safety. "
House arrests have been issued for eight executives, including the owner, Mr. Emilio Riva, and his son: the charge is that of environmental disaster. Seals have been placed in six departments of the hot-parks ores, the coke oven batteries, the sintering area, the blast furnaces, the steelworks and the iron materials management. When the ILVA workers came to know of the action of the investigating Judge, they left their workspaces in the factory and started a worker’s demonstration. They proclaimed, for the evening, an all-out strike. About 5,000 workers crowded the streets; some other 200 workers started a sit-in in front of the Prefecture. A multitude of workers invaded the swing bridge.
I only would like to recall that, in February 1998, when the public opinion became aware of the case of the Cold Rolling Mill Plant, concerning some employees who had been confined to that deserted plant because "undesirable" for the management, the other workers, their colleagues, did not lift a finger .
The chief prosecutor of Taranto, Mr. Franco Sebastio said, correctly: "We are not crazy reckless: we just try to keep on working, continuing on our way, without bowing our heads, by reasoning".
The Minister for Environment, Mr. Clini, and the Minister of Development, Mr. Passera, have already announced that they will challenge the decision of the judge and will do anything to stop this process.
Hope they won’t get by.
Nevertheless, the government in Rome, the local authorities and the social partners, have signed an agreement on the clearing operations for the recovery plan of the city.
Meanwhile, the president of the Apulia region, Mr. Vendola, is really concerned about workers. Maybe he is a bit less concerned about the environment. However he has announced that "The region will bring a civil action in these criminal proceedings." Which means, more or less, to run with the hare and hunt with the hounds: this way, anywhere the thing will go, he will be always on the right side.
If these measures will not be hampered, if things will not go back but will continue on this path, then it will be a victory for environmentalists and for those who, like me, have always campaigned for the closure of ILVA Steelworks, and not only for that single factory.
All the demonstrations, the protest marches that have been made, organized, experienced and suffered by those who believed in the right cause will, finally, have a reason to be: let's keep on, hand in hand; let us stand united and continue our fight: we will not let the capitalist and obscurantist forces prevail, suppressing the positive results of our battles. Because there is never the final achievement of a goal, but there is always a new beginning, to pursue some other goals.
As far as I am concerned, without neglecting the present confrontation, I would like to turn my attention to the freedom of peoples who have been deprived of their identity, of their origins. And this concerns me closely, as this also involves my own land and my country: a reality from which we have to start and then face what's in the rest of the world.
