How to get rid of negative thoughts?
loveislam:
Lately, I have been experiencing a lot of negative thinking. I have tried distracting myself by engaging in activities I like but that relieved me temporarily. Just wanted to know how you guys overcome negativity and I could use some of your advice :)
Lena:
Pray and ask God for help- talk to God about my problems and pray for guidance.
Reflect on my blessings
Skype a friend or family member - just hearing their voice usually makes me feel a better except if they are down too and then you can feel more negative than before you called lol!!
Read a good book, watch Family Guy or The Simpsons on TV, watch a good movie, listen to some inspiring music.
AND it's really important to do something physical - EXERCISE gets rid of negative toxins.

One way I have found is to simply remove negative stimuli. Out of sight, out of mind. I was surprised, as I became more mindful that I was subconsciously seeking out a lot of negative situations on purpose. Out of habit, out of familiarity, etc. Some people in your life build you up, others will drag you down whether they intend to or not. So let go of them and you will find yourself rising.
However the best way is to lose the power afforded to your mind. This site explains the process in great detail. Have a read through. Essentially, all your thoughts are like plants or seedlings and every time you give attention to them it is like shining light on them and making them grow.
Doing this to negative thoughts makes them grip you harder and this means you will focus even harder on them every day. So the only way is to relax your mind and let these thoughts wash through you. I have been practicing this in my meditations for a couple of months and have seen incredible results. One of the main annoyances with negative thoughts is that it feels like you have to think them and without being deliberately mindful you don't even notice this feeling. You don't even notice that you are basically addicted to thinking & feeling negative. It's like when you're thirsty and automatically drink some water without even noticing. But unlike water, you don't HAVE to think negatively. And realising this feels like the biggest weight off your shoulders, it is so amazing. Hope this helps! And please do read the link, there is so much amazing wisdom on that site.
The #1 thing is basically, gratitude. The more you look out around the world and find things to be thankful to God for, the more these thoughts will dissolve away. It might take days, weeks, months or years but practice this. Do it deliberately and over time it will become you. Gratitude to God is the most powerful acid burning away the shackles of negativity. As you rise in gratitude, the ungrateful cease to have power over you. Higher vibration sees through lower vibration. Everything suddenly becomes harmonious, life feels magical. Do this daily and I don't mean read this and think "yeah I'll do it" then forget. This is not a 'feel good phrase on a pretty background with trees, ocean and girl holding a butterfly.jpeg", this is LIFE. Make this the EXCLUSIVE object of your life. God shows you more and more, the more genuinely grateful you are. It's like Alice jumping into the rabbit hole, it is psychedelic.

This describes my mental state accurately. I know that I have certain thoughts that bother me, but instead of trying to ignore them, I just seem to look for another negative stimulus. It's an obsession as you stated :( I am desperately in need for relaxation!!
