Muhammad could write but not read ?
Student of Allah:
Shalom Aleikhom,
I know most of you guys probably went through these "Sahih" hadiths before. As we know from traditions, God gave Muhammad the ability to split the moon but not read a single word. I wish to know how the following "divine" sahih hadith is to be interpreted :
Sahih Bukhari [Volume 3, Book 49, Hadith 863]
Narrated by Al-Bara
When the Prophet intended to perform 'Umra in the month of Dhul-Qada, the people of Mecca did not let him enter Mecca till he settled the matter with them by promising to stay in it for three days only. When the document of treaty was written, the following was mentioned: 'These are the terms on which Muhammad, Allah's Apostle agreed (to make peace).' They said, "We will not agree to this, for if we believed that you are Allah's Apostle we would not prevent you, but you are Muhammad bin 'Abdullah." The Prophet said, "I am Allah's Apostle and also Muhammad bin 'Abdullah." Then he said to 'Ali, "Rub off (the words) 'Allah's Apostle' ", but 'Ali said, "No, by Allah, I will never rub off your name." So, Allah's Apostle took the document and wrote, 'This is what Muhammad bin 'Abdullah has agreed upon: No arms will be brought into Mecca except in their cases, and nobody from the people of Mecca will be allowed to go with him (i.e. the Prophet ) even if he wished to follow him and he (the Prophet ) will not prevent any of his companions from staying in Mecca if the latter wants to stay.' When the Prophet entered Mecca and the time limit passed, the Meccans went to 'Ali and said, "Tell your Friend (i.e. the Prophet ) to go out, as the period (agreed to) has passed." So, the Prophet went out of Mecca. The daughter of Hamza ran after them (i.e. the Prophet and his companions), calling, "O Uncle! O Uncle!" 'Ali received her and led her by the hand and said to Fatima, "Take your uncle's daughter." Zaid and Ja'far quarrel ed about her. 'Ali said, "I have more right to her as she is my uncle's daughter." Ja'far said, "She is my uncle's daughter, and her aunt is my wife." Zaid said, "She is my brother's daughter." The Prophet judged that she should be given to her aunt, and said that the aunt was like the mother. He then said to 'All, "You are from me and I am from you", and said to Ja'far, "You resemble me both in character and appearance", and said to Zaid, "You are our brother (in faith) and our freed slave."
Summary:
1. Treaty document written and Muhammad was addressed as messenger there.
2. The opposition wanted to remove "messenger" because they didnt believe him as one.
3. Ali said he can never rub off "messenger" from the document. Muhammad agreed however, and he took the document and wrote it himself (the rest of the terms and conditions).
Now. Since his is "SAHIH". We have problems. The fanclub of Bukhari either has to agree that this contains mistake, or agree that Muhammad could write and his hadith is "SAHIH". Either way, this hadith testifies against traditional understandings. Because none of the options are in favor of what they believe.

Wel my friend, u missed the point. He did not write anything at all. He simply erased the word messenger which was pointed out to Him by Ali.

Shalom Aleikhom,
I am not very scholarly. So, can you clarify that for me please ? As i read it:
"...........So, Allah's Apostle took the document and wrote, 'This is what Muhammad bin 'Abdullah has agreed upon:......"
Since you said that no, he did not write, it helps me if you provide your reasons. It says that he did write, so explain to me why you think otherwise. Is there something wrong with the arabic ? Does the arabic say that "he erased" instead of "he wrote" ? Please dont leave me in the dark . :) Inshallah, God will reward you for enlightening me.

English translation error!
it is mentioned above that the Prophet s.a.w asked Ali to "Rub off (the words) 'Allah's Apostle' ". all that required was mere rubing(erasing) the word 'Allah's Apostle'. there was no need for rewriting the document.
in the al-Hudaybiyah Treaty, the prophet (s.a.w) did not write the treaty, but his cousin `Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) was the writer. While writing the treaty, Suhail ibn `Amr [Quraish side] rejected that the prophet would have his name signed as the messenger or apostle of Allah (rasoulu Allah).
Sohail asked to have it changed to “Muhammad, son of Abdullah”. Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) then asked `Ali to omit rasoulu Allah, which means the messenger of Allah. Yet, Ali did not like the idea of omitting it and said: “By Allah I swear I will never omit rasoulu Allah!” Thus, the prophet himself - with his thumb - omitted rasoulu Allah.
One part of the story, which the Orientalists usually – deliberately - do not mention, is the fact that when `Ali refused to omit rasoulu Allah, Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w) said to `Ali: “show it to me.” After `Ali showed it to him, the prophet omitted it.
If the Prophet (s.a.w) could read then why did he need Ali to point it out to him? (Refer to Saheeh Muslim, Book 019, Number 4403)

Please provide the Arabic to back up your claim. According to your claim, the only Arabic word that shoud be there is the Arabic for rub ? I have done some home work:
فكتب = He wrote
I am confirming that I read all of your questions. But will not answer any before this one thing is solved. Was it RUB or WROTE. You claimed it is RUB. Prove it. So that you can share the light with me.
I must inform you that I do not have triple PhD in Arabic. But your claim was very bold. So I attempted to do my homework. It is your turn to share your homework. :)
Show me why you say it is "rub" not "wrote" and then I may agree that its mistranslated.
Waiting for your response, peace be on you.
