Why muslims should NOT fast on the day of Ashura!
youssef4342:
Peace be upon you as well Student of Allah
Well the day of Atonement is for those who would follow the Torah. There are different rites in the Quran, such as fasting 2 months for killing a believer unintentially (?), (as repentance).
Repentance from breaking an oath is fasting 3 days
Fasting could thus be a form of repentance. however, there is no prescribed "atonement day" in the Quran.... you can dedicate a fast anyday you would like i would think....
Just like how Mary was told to say that she ~"dedicated a fast/Abstinance to the Most Gracious, so i will not speak with anyone today"...
To say, fasting/abstinance would be a form of self-restriction and maybe humbling oneself...

Abu Maamar narrated that Abdul Warith said that Ayub said that Abdullah ibn Saeed ibn Jubayr said that his father said that ibn Abbas said: The prophet came to Medina and saw that Jews were fasting on Ashura (Passover) so he said to them: Why do you fast on this day? The Jews replied: This is a blessed day when Allah saved the children of Israel from their foe so Moses fasted on this day. The prophet said: I am more worthy of Moses than you. So he fasted on that day and ordered everyone to do so as well
According to hadiths, the prophet simply fasted on that day because he saw Jews doing so. The prophet adopting Jewish sunna? ::)
youssef4342:
This would be in direct contradition with the Quran:
[2:120] Neither the Jews, nor the Christians, will accept you, unless you follow their religion. Say, "GOD's guidance is the true guidance." If you acquiesce to their wishes, despite the knowledge you have received, you will find no ally or supporter to help you against GOD.

Interesting take!
