How/Why did hadiths become a second source of law?

Very good question. I do not know of any accurate answer to your question. It will be exciting to pin point the reason of the "Why/How" of this hadith indoctrination's general acceptance. I am currently working on a rebuttal paper to the "Obey the messenger" issue. I am approaching the issue from a very different angle and my draft of the paper is complete. I am looking for people to help enhance the impact of the paper or atleast correct my mistakes prior to me publishing the paper.
By the way, by publishing the paper , all I mean is that posting it online or any other media for people to read.
As for Hadiths becoming "second source", I think it has more to do with the delivery of the message in areas outside the prophet's home grounds and political issues and people's bias towards setting partner beside "The God". People are ,for some reason, ready to set partners beside God very easily.

Your rebuttal sounds very interesting - anytime I mention Qur'an alone it's always 'Obey the messenger'. When will it be up?

This is WHY;

Do they not look into the realm of the heavens and the earth and everything that Allah has created and [think] that perhaps their appointed time has come near? So in what statement/Hadith hereafter will they believe?
the heavens and the earth is a Hadith, not just a book.
One Solution I know is ;
Follow Quran 6:1, automatically Follow Bible 1:1 ?!
Most Hadith Bukhari plagiarised from The Bible. Even Amica follow the Dajjal Hadith that is Clearly plagiarised from The Bible.
Most People who stop Following Hadith Bukhari, simply because they know the Bible. And if Sunnis read the Bible, they doubts their Sunni Believes and Stop Following Hadith Bukhari. That is Why Sunni Scholars Vehemently preventing Sunnis to read even a single Verse from The Bible, or their Deception will be uncovered.
No Sunnis can agree ;
Bible 1:1
God created the heavens and the earth. Bible 1:1, is true.
They are Doom as long they cannot solve this matter.
Radi Ashun:
Probably the same reason the Council of Nicea threw out parts of the Bible and kept others. Also the scholars thing is similar to how in the Middle Ages the normal populace was dependent on their priest to read and interpret the Bible as most were illiterate at the time. The Vatican was and still is the authority on Biblical and religious edicts and there are many Catholics that blindly follow them to this day.
People have a tendency to believe the "experts" when it comes to religion and hence don't question the scholars. So whatever they say, people will be like "Yeah OK"
OPF:
Perhaps a flow towards conservation before a flow towards liberalism.
If the loose/free side of islam came before the tight/preserving side then we would assuredly be annihilated.
Peace

I finally understood what you've been saying, you have a really really good question. Time to read the bible methinks, it'll be very interesting to see the similarities between the bible and hadith.
