How/Why did hadiths become a second source of law?

I'm just wondering how these texts became so important that in some cases they override the holy book itself. Surely, when they were first put together people would have been skeptical? They couldn't have been that stupid to believe that people would remember something word for word 2 centuries after the Prophet's death?

And why did they become so important. Were people too lazy to think on their own or what?

Salam,

Very good question. I do not know of any accurate answer to your question. It will be exciting to pin point the reason of the "Why/How" of this hadith indoctrination's general acceptance. I am currently working on a rebuttal paper to the "Obey the messenger" issue. I am approaching the issue from a very different angle and my draft of the paper is complete. I am looking for people to help enhance the impact of the paper or atleast correct my mistakes prior to me publishing the paper.

By the way, by publishing the paper , all I mean is that posting it online or any other media for people to read.

As for Hadiths becoming "second source", I think it has more to do with the delivery of the message in areas outside the prophet's home grounds and political issues and people's bias towards setting partner beside "The God". People are ,for some reason, ready to set partners beside God very easily.

Have you guys noticed now within Sunni mindset; there are another source of law which could nullified both Hadiths and Quran? Its called "Ijma Ulema" (Consensus of Scholars). To trace why Hadiths come into the picture it's the same as why  "Ijma Ulema" are being needed.

Salaam,

That's a good point actually. I went onto a Sunni forum and I asked something along those lines and they basically said that interpreting the Qur'an on your own is the same as an illiterate farmer going to a university and talking about the human anatomy.  ??? That's why we need hadith and that's why I assume people feel the need to have a scholar consensus. I think part of it is that the majority are doing it, and it's more comfortable to do what the majority are doing so they stick to it. Another part of it is probably brainwashing.

But sometimes, things scholars/imams say make no sense whatsoever and just go against basic morals.  Like the breasfeeding non-mahram men thing - that's just idiocy. You'd have to be a right fool to believe that. And then you have others that say it's okay to temporarily marry girls that are as young as 4 years old but you can't 'penetrate' - that goes against basic morals - how can you follow someone with views like that? What makes a person follow these types of people? Is it just self gratification?
