--- Quote ---SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (KUER) - Monday, Doug talks with historian Fred Donner about the earliest days of Islam. Donner has written a new book called "Muhammad and the Believers," and in it, he challenges the traditional views of the founding of the faith. Donner says that Muhammad led what could be called a "Believer's movement," a religious reformation that emphasized strict monotheism and included righteous Christians and Jews. He joins us to describe the original vision of Islam - and its eventual emergence as a distinct religion.

liquiddharma:
Good stuff, he has a very intelligent interpretation, addresses all the attacks callers make well.

Magnus:
Donner alludes to certain parts of the Qur'an not being quite as "early" as the rest of the text. Anyone know what he's on about?

Wakas:
Well, the generally accepted story is that revelation took place over a certain number of years, so he could be referring to that. However, I do know Donner rejects Wansbrough's claim that The Quran was compiled much later than thought.

Wakas:
You can download a part of his book here.

It seems to be missing chapters 3 and 4 however.

I definitely recommend the book.
