Peace All

On the weekend of August 28 and 29, we will be hosting the above workshop in Johannesburg, South Africa.

In order to have as complete a picture as possible from the Muslim community, I would like to request any papers that people may have prepared on this or related subjects. I am particularly interested in papers of people who are active in achieving whatever it is that they have put forward in their papers. If this is the case please include a summary of what you may be doing to put your plan into action.

If anyone here has prepared a paper themselves please PM me. If you know of anyone else who has, please post the link.

Also, anyone who lives in the area is welcome to join us. Just PM me so that we can make the arrangements for your attendance.

As with all our events, the focus is on Quran, rather than external sources. Therefore papers and delegates should be serving the same purpose.

peace Imraan,

Can you elaborate a little on "socio-economic requirements", e.g. with some sub-headings.

Peace Wakas

Thanks for your interest.

The subject matter that we will be covering include the concepts of sadaqah, zakaat, nafaqa, ribaa, Islamic Economics in the Modern World, etc.

More important than this, we will be covering how we can develop a framework for a sustainable community. This would include a view of what a community would look like, in which people would have the freedom to implement quranic values in the social and economic structure of the community. We would then look at designing a step by step process of how to get to this goal. The most important part of this particular workshop will be setting in motion the process of implementing the first step or steps toward these goals.

This will not necessarily be a community made up only of Muslims, but rather a coming together of individuals who agree to conduct their mutual affairs by certain principles. It's a big undertaking, but as they say "a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step".

The intended output of this workshop is a workable baitul maal within our Quranic group through a sustainable business model that can develop from this local footing to a regional and eventually a national project. The focus will be on a business that can build capital for taking the project forward.

peace Imraan,

I haven't studied much of these topics, but here are some resources:
http://islam-and-muslims.com/Islamic-Economics.pdf
http://islam-and-muslims.com/Riba-Interest-Fazlur-Rahman.pdf
See Abdur Rab and Mustafa Akyol articles here
http://www.trulyinterestfree.com (set up by co-author of QXP 1st edition)
http://free-minds.org/econsystem
http://www.quranicteachings.co.uk/economy.htm
http://www.parvez-video.com/islam/reformation/zakat_economics/index.asp
http://www.parvez-video.com/pertaining_to_economy.asp
chapters 13 and 13 of http://www.tolueislam.org/Parwez/ICR/ICR.htm
chapter 7 of http://free-minds.org/sites/default/files/TNR.pdf

In terms of a general sustainable community, there are many online articles about this. Self-sufficiency is important for any community, and is not necessarily related to The Quran etc. Things like utilising knowledge and modern methods in order to achieve food/water/utilities security, sharing of resources/skills/knowledge to minimise costs and increase efficiency. Once you have this, you will free up time/money for community projects etc. Generally, bringing betterment to a community will lead to positive growth collectively. All the best.
