jalada
« on: April 02, 2010, 09:33:29 AM »
Salaam, brothers and sisters

I have been thinking for some time over the fact that although we are very happy about not stoning anybody for adultery, 100 lashes (if it is lashes), is no joke. In fact I ask myself what 100 lashes can do to a person, specially a woman. That is why I am wondering whether there is more behind what seems at first sight through the filter of 1.600 years. ¿Was jalada what we understand now as jalada?

I have been looking through internet to see how this punishment is delivered nowadays. It seems that in Saudi Arabia, it is not a lah but a baton, and isused over the clothes. The person is throughly examined for physical fitness to undergo the punishment and not all strikes are given on the same lot. May be 15 one week, 15 the next, etc.

Of course, as verybody else here, I am aware that to reach a verdict of zina is very, very very difficult so that the punishment would be very rare and unusual. Nonetheless, I think the matter merits a more thorough consideration.

Therefore I would be very grateful for whatever insights the compannions of this forum could give.

Salaam

Jald is skin. I read 24/2 as to 'skin' the person 100 times, that is to expose him or her to the community 100 times. This is done to show his or her unworthiness to be a faithful partner.

well, you're right but the member aked about the word jalada not jald by the way it's jeld "skin in english" .

the term is taking from the verb "Jalada" which means lash in english and the meanings of this word in Arabic is strike the skin of the person (according to a sin first).

The woman held guilty of consented illicit sexual intercourse and the man held guilty of consented illicit sexual intercourse [by the competent court of law], thereby you [the state/executive authority responsible to execute the judgments of courts] flog each one of two of them hundred [100] times, the object of flogging being restricted to the skin جَلْدَةٍ [not excoriation].

And let not softness of heart/feeling of sympathy seize you people for both two of them in the Prescribed Physical Procedure of Allah if you people truly believe in Allah and the Last Day [Note: this command exhibits that in Allah's knowledge Believers are too soft hearted and sympathetic]

and you people [state/executing agency of society] must let the award of punishment to both two of them be witnessed by a group of people from amongst the Believers. [/color] [24:02]

Yeah, if you look at how 'jild' (not jald, my mistake, thanks to thereformer for correction) is used, it shows maximum exposedness. 4/56 is an example of this. This is the root meaning, a meaning which is tied to a physical signifier. Therefore, I take all other meanings to be derived. Ajlidu therefore must have the same connotation, which is to expose the person.

Why you overlook the last sentence of the verse?
