Muslim scholar argues that 653 hadiths in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim are false

QuoteJamal al-Banna, brother of Muslim Brotherhood founder Hassan al-Banna

I just heard about this controversy while watching Arabic satellite. So I did a bit of googling and found the following 2 week-old report. While this story has gotten virtually no attention here in the West, it is apparently causing problems in the Islamic world, especially Egypt, where it originates.

Muslims have traditionally believed that the hadiths of Bukhari and Muslim -- both of which are prefixed with that all-important Arabic word, Sahih, that is, "verified" or "authenticated" -- are true, indeed, second in authority only to the Koran.

Simultaneously, there are a number of outrageous hadiths in these two collections -- such as Rida al-Kabir (breastfeeding the adult) -- which, at least some Muslims, would prefer if they were stricken out of the hadith corpus.

The problem, of course, is if Muslim scholars cast doubt on a single hadith in Bukhari and Muslim, the collections in their entirety become suspect. And without these two otherwise canonical hadith collections, Sunni Islam -- which relies more on the hadith than even the Koran when it comes to regulating life -- becomes unintelligible; sharia law falls apart. Another one of Islam's "catch-22" situations.

"Jamal al-Banna's new book: critique of Bukhari and Muslim," by John Stringer for St. Francis Magazine, December 18:

Jamal al-Banna, a younger brother of Hassan al-Banna (founder of the Muslim Brotherhood) has just published a book in which he argues that 653 of the hadiths as written in al-Bukhari and Muslim are incorrect and should not be accepted. The Arabic book is titled The Cleansing of Bukhari and Muslim from useless Hadiths (2008).
After the Qur?an, al-Bukhari?s collection of hadiths (the acts and sayings of the prophet Muhammad) is considered the most sacred book in Islam; never before has any Muslim scholar who lives in the Arab world, thrown so much doubt ? publicly - on the sources of Islam.

But Mr Jamal al-Banna (86 years old now) is used to being attacked by al-Azhar, and he says he does not care. He excludes six kinds of hadiths:

* Those that explain the Qur?an: the Qur?an can?t by explained by hadiths.
* Those that talk bad about women - like the one?s that call them equal to dogs and cows and to beat them up and so on.
* Those that forbid the freedom of religion and that threaten those who leave Islam.
* Those with extreme ideas for encouraging people into Islam and the ones threatening people wit physical violence.
* Those that talk about Muhammad?s miracles.
* Some others of which he thinks that the story is not true at all.
63:10 Give from what We have provided to
you, before death comes to one of you,
then he says: "My Lord, if only You
could delay this for a short while, I
would then be charitable and join the
righteous!"

Dear jibbo

Bukhari is a jew sent traitor of Islam. Circumcision is a jewish tradition, not followed by christians, the next generation to Musa and the immediate generation to Muhammad. The jew Bukhari brought this custom to muslims through his hadith. Next in his hadith, Bukhari the jew, writes in his hadith that muhammad was manhandled by a jew in the centre of the road by a jew loan giver when muhammad failed to pay back the money as promised. This hadith is to degrade the prophet muhammad. And further tells that muhammad thought it is better to believe and get a loan from a jew rather than believing the muslim sahaabas infested around him. Then the next hadith is when a jew dead body is taken to the burial, muhammad had to stand to honor the dead jew.

Bukhari is none but a jew send traitor to denigrate islam and prophet muhammad. His story always links muhammad with the jews and not with the christians casts doubts that hadith is the plot against islam by jews.

So nothing happens as per your wish but as per the Wish of Allah. Change your ways in the path of Allah before too late. Be done with Bukhari.

Yes, true. Any way the answer is the same.

Hadith ( anti quran )

Muhammad has how many wives we do not know; some say 9, 11, 13 and so on. When the choices were so many, he always preferred those wives in their periods - whereas Allah says stay away from women until they are pure from their periods. The Muhammad of Quran would not have dared to go against the ayat 2: 222. What Bukhari narrated was not the quran alone muhammad.

His brother Hassan formed the Muslim brotherhood. Jamal was always different since the 40s. He always called for the Islamic reformation and had views that were very liberal. The sad thing is he says in the 40s and 50s his views were accepted by a lot more people than now. He emerged after 9-11. This book will be very important

Peace,

I didn't even notice this thread before... This is a good sign. Many of Bukhari's writings are not only against the teachings of the Reading, but many of them are actually completely illogical and unreasonable. It's about time somebody decided to stand up and question them... What I'm wondering about now is this:

Quote from: jibbo on January 05, 2009, 06:22:03 AM

If they're disregarding all of these, what's the point of keeping any of them?! With a basis like this, especially in considering hadith and sunna writings alongside the Reading, if they're going to reject these components of the books, they may as well just throw the books away altogether, since they'll have absolutely no value in relation to Islamic doctrine and practice...

Peace,

Ahmad
