How to fast?

I may seem ignorant, but can someone give the definition of 'fasting'?
Abstinence from all food and drink between dawn and dusk?
Please help, i know it is a really basic thing, but I have been doing so many things the wrong way, I would like it written down as to what is the 'right' way.

During the nights of the fast you may have sex, eat and drink. These things are not to be done during the fasting period, from the thread of light till just before darkness. I could not find any of my old notes on fasting so I think I'll end it here.
