Salaam

Being part of a sunni family means the TV/music goes off for this month and extra special snack foods are cooked as well as the tarawih prayers.

An excerpt of the sermon given by Prophet Muhammad (PP&BBUH) on the Last Friday of Sha'ban on the reception of the Month of Ramadhan

?O People !

"Indeed ahead of you is the blessed month of Allah. A month of blessing, mercy and forgiveness. A month which with Allah is the best of months. Its days, the best of days, its nights, the best of nights, and its hours, the best of hours. It is the month which invites you to be the guests of Allah and invites you to be one of those near to Him.
Each breath you take glorifies him; your sleep is worship, your deeds are accepted and your supplications are answered. So, ask Allah, your Lord; to give you a sound body and an enlightened heart so you may be able to fast and recite his book, for only he is unhappy he who is devoid of Allah?s forgiveness during this great month.
Remember the hunger and thirst of the day of Qiyamah (Judgement Day) with your hunger and thirst; give alms to the needy and poor, honor your old, show kindness to the young ones, maintain relations with your blood relations; guard your tongues, close your eyes to that which is not permissible for your sight, close your ears to that which is forbidden to hear, show compassion to the orphans of people so compassion may be shown to your orphans. Repent to Allah for your sins and raise your hands in dua during these times, for they are the best of times and Allah looks towards his creatures with kindness, replying to them during the hours and granting their needs if he is asked..."

Wa Ssalaamm

Someone:
Salam all,

To be sincere, I would say that I?m note sure nor have solid evidences to Fast or not in this period of year (from the Quran). But since I?m originally from a sunni family, I will probably be fasting tomorrow unless God wills.

I have tried also to (restart) praying (doing Salat) in the way sunnis do, but I was not able to convince myself of doing the same movements. I was not able to back it with instructions from the quran, since my understanding have progressed (changed).

I live in Canada with my wife, she?s a Christian originally, but she?s always trying to understand and to find the truth as I do. I have no social obligations now to fast or not (not like if I were in an Arab country), my wife encourages me as to help me do what I think is correct, by preparing some soup and cakes  :) , but I still have some doubts in my heart   .

I always remember the story of Abraham when he was searching for the truth, it?s comforting me:

6:75 And it is such that We showed Abraham the kingdom of heavens and earth, so that he will be of those who have certainty.

6:76 When the night covered him, he saw a planet, and he said: ?This is my Lord.? But when it disappeared he said: ?I do not like those that disappear.?

6:77 So when he saw the moon rising, he said: ?This is my Lord.? But when it disappeared he said: ?If my Lord will not guide me, then I will be amongst the wicked people!?

6:78 So when he saw the sun rising, he said: ?This is my Lord, this is bigger.? But when it disappeared he said: ?My people, I am innocent of that which you have set-up.?

6:79 ?I shall turn my face to the One who initiated the heavens and the earth, in monotheism, and I am not of those who set-up partners.?
