Discuss Latest News/Events / French Panel Favors Ban on Head Scarves
« on: December 11, 2003, 10:09:28 AM »
PARIS - A blue-ribbon panel commissioned by President Jacques Chirac said Thursday it favors banning Islamic head scarves and other conspicuous religious attire in public buildings, including schools.
Several girls have been expelled from public schools this year for wearing Islamic head scarves, fueling debate over the notion of secularism, a constitutionally guaranteed principle that is a core value of modern-day France.

Christian and Jewish religious leaders have said they are opposed to a law banning head scarves from schools and favor better integration of the Muslim community into the mainstream.

But there are fears that head scarves signal inroads by Muslim fundamentalists in France's estimated 5 million-strong Muslim community ? 8 percent of the population and the largest of any Western European country.

The panel's conclusions, which follow six months of study and 120 hearings, were expected to play a role in Chirac's own decision on whether to propose legislation on the matter.

The 20-member panel agreed unanimously that France should impose a law banning "obvious" religious and political symbols from public buildings, such as head scarves, yarmulkes or large-sized crucifixes. Small pendants like the Star of David would be permitted.

On a state visit last week to Tunisia, Chirac told a group of high school students that wearing a veil in France was seen as "a sort of aggression."

KABUL, Afghanistan - Nine children were found dead after an American air raid in southern Afghanistan (news - web sites) on Saturday, the U.S. military said.
An American A-10 aircraft struck a site south of Ghazni where a "known terrorist" was believed to be hiding at about 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Army Maj. Christopher E. West told The Associated Press.
"Following the attack, ground coalition forces searching the area found the bodies of both the intended target and those of nine children nearby," he said.
The U.S. military was sending a team of investigators to the site to determine if U.S. forces were at fault, West said.

The atrocities they get away with!     If a terrorist had killed one person, they would have annihilated a whole village in retaliation!

General Issues / Questions / SHOULD DoctorNO STAY OR GO?
« on: November 04, 2003, 08:05:32 AM »
Peace All Muslims,

They have denied the truth when it came to them. The news will ultimately come to them of what they were mocking. (6:5)

And as such, We have sent down to you the Scripture. Thus, those whom We have given the scripture will believe in it. Also, some of your people will believe in it. The only ones who mock Our revelations are the rejecters. (29:47)

I am all for tolerance, and many of you know, I joke and make fun all the time. But when we are constantly being ridiculed, when our system and beliefs are being mocked and insulted. I think it's time we took a stand. I recommend DoctorNO be taken out of the forum, unless he learns to respect our ways and perhaps discuss issues in accordance to Islam. I know there are times when he debates intelligently, but mostly he ridicules the Qur'an.

One last thing, here's what God says about such... then make a decision;

And it has been sent down to you in the scripture, that if you hear God?s revelations being rejected and ridiculed in, then do not sit with them until they move on to a different subject; if not, then you are like them. God will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers in Hell all together.(4:140)

Discuss Latest News/Events / Nigerian Woman Escapes Stoning Sentence
« on: September 25, 2003, 07:58:23 AM »
By TODD PITMAN, Associated Press Writer

KATSINA, Nigeria - An Islamic appeals court Thursday overturned the conviction of a Nigerian woman sentenced to death by stoning for committing adultery, a case that sharpened the divide between Muslims and Christians in Africa's most-populous country.

Amina Lawal would have been the first woman stoned to death since 12 northern states began adopting strict Islamic law, or Shariah, in 1999. Four of five judges on the court voted to throw out the case, citing procedural errors in her trial.

Wrapped in a light orange veil, her eyes downcast, Lawal cradled her nearly 2-year-old daughter as the court announced its decision. Police and lawyers hustled her away afterward.

"It's a victory for law. It's a victory for justice," said defense attorney Hauwa Ibrahim. "And it's a victory for what we stand for ? dignity and fundamental human rights."

An Islamic court first convicted Lawal, 32, in March 2002 after the birth of her daughter two years after she divorced her husband. Judges rejected Lawal's first appeal five months later.

Prosecutors, who argued Lawal's child was living proof she committed adultery, said they were satisfied with the verdict but had 30 days to appeal.

The verdict drew international condemnation. The government of President Olusegun Obasanjo called for Lawal's life to be spared, and Brazil offered her asylum.

The Islamic appeals panel ruled the conviction couldn't stand because Lawal wasn't given enough time to understand the charges against her; only one judge, instead of the required three, presided at her trial; and she was not caught in the act of sex out of wedlock.

In the sole dissenting opinion, Judge Sule Sada said Lawal had confessed to the crime and the conviction should stand. But the defense had argued that the court should reject Lawal's confession because no lawyers were present when she made it.

The introduction of strict Islamic law in a dozen northern states has triggered deadly clashes between Christians and Muslims. Five people, including Lawal, have been sentenced to death by stoning. Three have had their convictions overturned.

"We think the death penalty for adultery is contrary to the Nigerian constitution," said Francois Cantier, a lawyer with French group Avocats Sans Frontieres, or Lawyers Without Borders, who was advising the defense. "We think that death by stoning is contrary to international treaties against torture which Nigeria has ratified. We think that death by stoning is degrading human treatment."

Also under Shariah, one man has been hanged for killing a woman and her two children and Muslim authorities have amputated the hands of three people for stealing.

Many Muslims in the predominantly Islamic north have welcomed Shariah, saying it's a key part of their religion and discourages crime.

Lead defense lawyer Aliyu Musa Yawuri said Lawal ? a poor, uneducated woman from a rural family ? didn't understand the charges against her at the time.

Lawal has identified her alleged sexual partner, Yahaya Mohammed, and said he promised to marry her. Mohammed, who would also have faced death by stoning denied any wrongdoing and was acquitted for lack of evidence.

Lawal is the second Nigerian woman to be condemned to death for having sex out of wedlock under Islamic law. The first, Safiya Hussaini, had her sentence overturned on appeal in March ? the same time that Lawal was convicted.

Science / Medicine of Qur'an?
« on: September 18, 2003, 07:24:00 PM »
Salaam,
I got this e-mail forwarded to me. Usually I dont bother with such. But I just wanted to know from you guys here, what you thought. Especially those in the gulf (I believe Noor is in Qatar?) did you hear about this? Is it true?... or is it just one of those!

>Medicine of Quran
>
>One of the Swiss pharmaceutical companies has started producing a new
>medicine called "Medicine of Quraan" which allows the treatment of
>cataract without surgery. As the newspaper Ar-Raya, published in Qatar
>writes,"this drug which was synthesised by an Egyptian doctor Abdul
>Basit Muhammad from the secretions of human sweat glands and has an
>effectiveness of 99%
>with absolutely no side effects, was registered in Europe and the United
>States. It is also reported that one of the Swiss companies produces the
>new drug in the form of liquid and eye drops. The source of inspiration
>is Surah (Chapter) Yusuf. Dr Abdul Basit Muhammad
>emphasised that he obtained his inspiration from Surah Yusuf and said:
>"Once in the morning, I was reading Surah (Chapter) Yusuf. My attention
>lingered over the 84th and successive ayats (verses)."
>
>"Go with this shirt of mine, and cast it over the face of my father, he
>will become clear-sighted, and bring to me all your family." (Quraan
>12:93)
>
>They tell that Prophet Yakub who was mourning his son Yusuf (peace be
>upon them) in sadness and grief got his eyes turned white and later when
>people cast over the sorrowful father's face, the shirt of his son
>Yusuf, vision returned to him and he was able to see again. Here I
>started pondering. What could be there in the shirt of Yusuf? Finally I
>arrived at the decision that nothing except sweat could be on it. I
>concentrated my thoughts over the sweat and its composition. Then I
>proceeded to the laboratory for research.  I carried out a series of
>experiments on rabbits. The results turned out to be positive. Later I
>performed treatment on 250 patients by administering the drug twice a
>day for two weeks. Finally I achieved 99
>Per cent success and said to myself: " This is the miracle of the
>Quraan" Dr Abdul Basit Muhammad presented the results of his research to
>appropriate institutions in Europe and the United States dealing with
>patenting of new discoveries for consideration. After tests and
>research were performed, he finalised a contract with a Swiss company on
>the production of the medicine on the condition that the package should
>clearly mention-"Medicine of Quraan." In the words of the Egyptian
>scientist, the company accepted his condition and started producing the
>new drug.
