When you read about a stick turning into a snake, what does that CONFIRM for you?

No seriously, God works in ways that we can't ever fathom completely...

In nature and in the labs, in ever changing sciences, day by day we know more...who knows what happened centuries ago?? If we take the quran to be the word of God confirming something that did happen to moses, who are we to say it didn't?? Are we running away from things we don't understand and labelling them metaphorical??

Don't want a heated debate here, just my take on this...I would think that God is showing us the literal side in one and the symbology present therein on the other, thus they are in balance...and perfectly suited...which makes it the truth on all levels.

I have sort of worked out what the staff and moving like the jinn thingy means...but that will have to wait for another day, as i'm going to pull a scherazade on you and go ponder some boggling questions...

I agree completely, i've never really thought that things could be so mistranslated as they apparently are...all i'm doing now, is when i try to understand a verse, go to the arabic and try to figure out what's there rather than additions or substractions...and that's a whole different ballgame than trying to understand commonly known translations as they invariably involve bias and prejudice one way or another...
And eventually this leads to one's own translations which gradually will be more and more true to the arabic itself...
But it's very surprising that through centuries, we've let bias and strange concepts overshadow somehow the purity of the quran...i didn't expect it to be this bad...but now i realise the depth of the problem.

Why not? According to you, God sends metaphors to frighten people to It's way... (i.e. people of Lot's town being destroyed, people of the Elephant being bombarded by hard clay, etc) so if He uses metaphors to frighten the average individual that should be afraid of being bombarded by hard clay, then why can't he use signs to frighten people? He obviously frightens people either way.

Vey good points in your posts Zach, especially the sun rising, had to stifle my mirth there...but don't hold your breath, ain't nothing gonna change...

Yes i had the same question, as there being no limits defined...that's why i think the marry off interpretation, since it's adding words to the verse is most probably wrong...if it's not there, it's not there....
