Prophets and Messengers / Dhul Quarnain, a messenger of God?
« on: April 03, 2011, 04:17:09 AM »
Salam,

I would like to ask you about Dhul Quarnain who is mentionned in sura 18.
Here are the verses where he is mentionned :

[18:83] They ask you about Zul-Qarnain. Say, "I will narrate to you some of his history."
[18:84] We granted him authority on earth, and provided him with all kinds of means.
[18:85] Then, he pursued one way.
[18:86] When he reached the far west, he found the sun setting in a vast ocean, and found people there. We said, "O Zul-Qarnain, you can rule as you wish; either punish, or be kind to them."
[18:87] He said, "As for those who transgress, we will punish them; then, when they return to their Lord, He will commit them to more retribution.
[18:88] "As for those who believe and lead a righteous life, they receive a good reward; we will treat them kindly."
[18:89] Then he pursued another way.
[18:90] When he reached the far east, he found the sun rising on people who had nothing to shelter them from it.
[18:91] Naturally, we were fully aware of everything he found out.
[18:92] He then pursued another way.
[18:93] When he reached the valley between two palisades, he found people whose language was barely understandable.
[18:94] They said, "O Zul-Qarnain, Gog and Magog are corruptors of the earth. Can we pay you to create a barrier between us and them?"
[18:95] He said, "My Lord has given me great bounties. If you cooperate with me, I will build a dam between you and them.
[18:96] "Bring to me masses of iron." Once he filled the gap between the two palisades, he said, "Blow." Once it was red hot, he said, "Help me pour tar on top of it."
[18:97] Thus, they could not climb it, nor could they bore holes in it.
[18:98] He said, "This is mercy from my Lord. When the prophecy of my Lord comes to pass, He will cause the dam to crumble. The prophecy of my Lord is truth."
[18:99] At that time, we will let them invade with one another, then the horn will be blown, and we will summon them all together.
[18:100] We will present Hell, on that day, to the disbelievers.
[18:101] They are the ones whose eyes were too veiled to see My message. Nor could they hear.

By reading this would you say 100% sure that Dhul Quranain is mentionned as a 'messenger of God'? In my opinion he is not explicitly mentionned as a messenger send by God to fulfill a particular mission, he 'only' seems to be an important charachter in history who was inspired by God to make what he made (or will make?). The verse 18:86 show us that he was inspired by God thru angels: "We said, "O Zul-Qarnain, you can rule as you wish; either punish, or be kind to them." but is it sufficient to say that Dhul Quarnain was or will be a messenger of God? Mary was also inspired by God as we can see in some verses (3:36; 3:42; 3:45), this inspiration does not make her a messenger.
Is there another example in the Quran which doesn't mention explicitly that a messenger is a messenger of God send by God to transmit a particular message? And, as a messenger have to show, thanks to God, a miracle, what is the miracle of Dhul Quarnain?

What do you think?

Salaam Sister,

I suggest using the forum search because the topic has been beaten to death (excuse the pun). The topics are worth reading :).

That being said, someone in this forum has created a website that is dedicated to discussing verse 4:34. You may want to check it out :)

http://www.quran434.com/

Hope that helps.

Ok, thank you. I will check this. :)

Salaam.

Marriage & Divorce / About 4:34
« on: January 27, 2011, 11:16:25 PM »
Hello/Salam to everyone,

I am really lost. I was asking questions about 4:34 in a submitter forum and i have been banned for this! I was not agree with the administrators who told me that questionning about that is due to "gynolatry" (if you don't accept the fact that 4:34 is not about wife beating it is because of gynolatry ???).
I was not really saying that the word "idribuhunna" does not mean "beat them" but i was wondering how to do such a thing could solve the problem. They answered to me by saying "you have not to question you have to say "I hear and I obey"". I agree with this, we have to obey but like with the verse which deals with "cutting hand's thief" i think we have to question ourselves. It is not like I was questionning about Salat which is something that I have to do right know. The forum I am talking about is a submitter one, so they should know that a word can mean several things like it is the case with cutting hand's thief...

So, because of this behavior I did some research about the possible meaning of "idribuhunna" but now I don't know what to think, some people say it cannot mean something else than "beat them" and some other say it can mean "cite them". I know I have to make a choice, I hope I am guided by God. In my opinion to beat is not something that can be solve any problem, so in my mind I think it does not mean "to beat" but I don't want to follow my wishes, I want to follow what God say, so for the moment I prefer to think that the word mean "to beat" but I am not against the possibility it can mean something different.

What about you? What do you think about this verse?
