Questions/Comments on the Quran / Sexual Consent
« on: April 01, 2013, 12:06:14 AM »
Salaam,

I have heard over and over that in marriage a woman must sexually please her husband even if she doesn't want to. To me this is nonsense and I remember watching that short film Submission and they used verses from the quran and one was to show that rape was ok (this was from the filmmaker's pov). My question is, are there any verses in the quran that hint at or discuss sexual consent? Where does this idea of consent fit in? Any thoughts are much appreciated. Thanks.

General Issues / Questions / Wanting input regarding a free Ham
« on: December 17, 2012, 03:15:59 AM »
So at my workplace they are giving away a free ham to every employee. Seeing as I believe I cannot eat this, I am wondering what I should do.

Option A: decline the ham
Option B: accept the ham and donate it somewhere

Anyone have any thoughts/ideas/opinions?

My apologies if this was posted in the wrong area, wasn't really sure where to post it...

Thanks

General Issues / Questions / Has this happened to you?
« on: May 11, 2012, 09:52:03 PM »
So I was over at Islamic Board dot com the other day and a recent revert had posted a question and part of it pertained to the fact that her family had a pet dog and she was worried about the dog being around.

I posted the usual welcome to Islam bit and then added she didn't need to worry about the dog because there was nothing in the Quran about dogs not being allowed in Islam and said there are verses that mention dogs. Then I said most Muslims who dislike dogs, dislike them for cultural rather than religious reasons.

Pretty harmless right? Guess not... I got an email from a moderator of the forum saying that they deleted my post because what I said wasn't true.

Sorry but WTF? Needless to say I am feeling a little irritated. I know in the main scheme of things its not really a big deal but I was still a little mad about it. I think what made me the mad most was the fact that I had been censored and that I what I said was not valid according to their narrow viewpoint. I honestly did not realize how close minded this forum was. Has anyone else had issues with this forum before?

Questions/Comments on the Quran / Literal vs Figural
« on: May 08, 2012, 02:08:28 PM »
Forgive me is this has already been asked before as I couldn't find it while searching the forum...

While reading the Quran, when do we know to read something as literal or as figural?

I am been thinking about this a lot lately...

General Issues / Questions / Muhammad Abduh Quote?
« on: April 27, 2012, 10:26:49 PM »
Not 100% sure if it was actually said by him because I could only find one source but it does make you think overall so I thought I would share...

"I went to the West and saw Islam, but no Muslims; I got back to the East and saw Muslims, but not Islam." -Muhammad Abduh

Now I am not trying to criticize anyone or anything. I think it is just a good reminder for all of us. We may call ourselves Muslims but are we truly practicing Islam? Just something to think about...

Questions/Comments on the Quran / Messenger as Judge 4:65
« on: April 10, 2012, 03:35:53 AM »
My question is relating to Surah 4 verse 65, I pulled the following from quran.com

Sahih International
But no, by your Lord, they will not [truly] believe until they make you, [O Muhammad], judge concerning that over which they dispute among themselves and then find within themselves no discomfort from what you have judged and submit in [full, willing] submission.

Muhsin Khan
But no, by your Lord, they can have no Faith, until they make you (O Muhammad SAW) judge in all disputes between them, and find in themselves no resistance against your decisions, and accept (them) with full submission.

Pickthall
But nay, by thy Lord, they will not believe (in truth) until they make thee judge of what is in dispute between them and find within themselves no dislike of that which thou decidest, and submit with full submission.

Yusuf Ali
But no, by the Lord, they can have no (real) Faith, until they make thee judge in all disputes between them, and find in their souls no resistance against Thy decisions, but accept them with the fullest conviction.

Shakir
But no! by your Lord! they do not believe (in reality) until they make you a judge of that which has become a matter of disagreement among them, and then do not find any straitness in their hearts as to what you have decided and submit with entire submission.

Dr. Ghali
(Yet) no, by your Lord, they will not believe till they make you judge regarding what they controvert among themselves. Thereafter they should not find in themselves any restriction about whatever you have decreed, and should submit in full submission.

Earlier today I was reading something and this verse was used as a basis to explain why we should follow hadith but when I went and read it, I got the opposite impression. Now I am unsure of what to make of it. Would love anyone else's thoughts. Lastly I tried to copy and paste to the best of my abilities but the formatting kind of got wonky so forgive me. source: www.quran.com/4

Questions/Comments on the Quran / Question about 4:15-4:16 in the quran
« on: February 08, 2012, 05:02:59 PM »
Here is the surah/verse from various english translations:

Sahih International
Those who commit unlawful sexual intercourse of your women - bring against them four [witnesses] from among you. And if they testify, confine the guilty women to houses until death takes them or Allah ordains for them [another] way.

Muhsin Khan
And those of your women who commit illegal sexual intercourse, take the evidence of four witnesses from amongst you against them; and if they testify, confine them (i.e. women) to houses until death comes to them or Allah ordains for them some (other) way.

Pickthall
As for those of your women who are guilty of lewdness, call to witness four of you against them. And if they testify (to the truth of the allegation) then confine them to the houses until death take them or (until) Allah appoint for them a way (through new legislation).

Yusuf Ali
If any of your women are guilty of lewdness, Take the evidence of four (Reliable) witnesses from amongst you against them; and if they testify, confine them to houses until death do claim them, or Allah ordain for them some (other) way.

Shakir
And as for those who are guilty of an indecency from among your women, call to witnesses against them four (witnesses) from among you; then if they bear witness confine them to the houses until death takes them away or Allah opens some way for them.

Dr. Ghali
And (as for) the ones of your women who come up with the obscenity, (i.e., illegal sexual intercourse; abomination) so, call four of you to witness against them. Then in case they (bear) witness, then retain them (The pronoun is the feminine plural) in the homes until death takes them up, (i.e., they die) or Allah sets for them a way.

Just confused as to what the sin being committed here (mentioned as illegal sex, indecency, lewdness) is? Is this adultery? The next verse talks about two men committing 'it' so could this also mean homosexuality? Then if the men repent they are ok but a woman is confined to her home for life? That seems really unjust. I mean I know that it says "...or until Allah (swt) finds a way..." but this is vague and yet for the men it explicitly says leave them alone after they repent and they are alright. It just kind of bothers me so I would appreciate over viewpoints and thoughts... just trying to understand and earnestly seeking guidance. Thanks
